MI: Geoffrey Fieger takes on Trump's proposal to arm teachers

The proposal made by President Donald Trump to arm teachers with guns is not only unfeasible, it would be worse than ineffective. What we need is a rational discussion of rational proposals.

Arming, training (and maintaining what would be the equivalent of the third-largest army in the world) would be a logistical and economic nightmare. There may be some teachers willing to carry guns, but the vast majority of teachers do not want guns in the classroom. Recruiting armed teachers would be difficult, a fact recognized by Trump who proposed a "bonus" for volunteers. Normal attrition of licensed and trained teachers means the cost would continue and grow every year.

I can shoot down this dolt's argument with one question:

If this wouldn't precisely fit the definition of a "well regulated militia", then what would?

Isn't the proposal to have armed teachers worded so the teachers buy or use THEIR OWN GUNS? Economical nightmare? I don't think training is all that expensive; hold a summer recess group session for those teachers in one town who wish to participate.
It can be done.

The sort of person you want as an armed teacher already has firearms and probably a ccw, at least in states that don't make that difficult to impossible to acquire.
Training should focus on lethal use of force in defense of self and students, and once given the teachers should qualify as special deputies under the sheriff's department.
Teachers already get extra pay for coaching, supervising clubs, and other activities. Why should this be any different?
