ALMOST 10 years on, memories of the tragic Port Arthur massacre remain so deeply etched in the Australian psyche that any increase in gun ownership would be regarded by most people as cause for concern.
Police Minister Judy Spence moved yesterday to reassure Queenslanders that the national gun laws are working and that while the number of registered firearms has increased, they have done so under much tighter controls. There are now fewer licensed firearms owners who hold, on average, three or four firearms each, the Minister said, including primary producers and sporting shooters. Police, she said, know exactly who has weapons and that they are stored safely. |
