Chris Hipes enjoys the challenge of a shooting match so much that he started the North Texas Submachinegun Match about five years ago. But he isn’t sure he wants his daughter to participate. She’s only 7 months old now, but he said she’ll have to be well-trained — and ready both physically and mentally — before she can take part in these events. "It’s an inherently dangerous sport," said Hipes, a 35-year-old maintenance supervisor in Denton. "It’s like NASCAR. If you’re on the front row, there’s a risk if there’s a wreck that a piece of the car can go into the audience. By letting your children participate in [shooting] matches, you take on that responsibility. "As a parent you have to decide: Was the risk worth it?" |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. — James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46 |
