An attempted armed robbery at a Terry Road convenience store ended in an exchange of gunfire Thursday night, with the store's clerk shot in the hand and the suspect critically wounded in the chest, a police official said.

Around 8:30 p.m., the unidentified suspect entered the Shell station at 1801 Terry Road, said Jackson police spokesman Robert Graham.

The Shell is located just off the North Terry Road exit of I-20. The closest open business Thursday night was a fast-food restaurant two blocks away.

"The individual came into the store, produced a .380-caliber weapon and announced the robbery," Graham said. "Detectives are trying to determine who shot first."

The suspect was transported to Central Mississippi Medical Center, Graham said.

Stanley Good, 59, of Florence, the clerk, was taken to Baptist Medical Center. The wound to his right hand was not life-threatening, Graham said.

The investigation is ongoing.

There was another robbery in the same area Thursday night.

Two men robbed Martin Cleaners and Laundry at 1055 Raymond Road at 1 p.m., Graham said.

"No one was injured," Graham said. "No gun was displayed but they made mention of it."

An undetermined amount of money was taken, Graham said.
