Thief who broke into occupied car shot and killed

Excerpted from full story that ran in the World-Herald as:
"No Charges Expected in Slaying"
by Nathan Odgaard
World-Herald Staff Writer
March 30, 2001

OMAHA, NEBRASKA -  "...charges probably won't be filed in the shooting death...according to police detectives..."

Keith Womochil, 37, was found lying in the parking lot of a strip mall near 84th and K Streets after a man called police at 4:45 a.m. Police questioned the caller, who is listed on police reports as Beau M. Morrison, 24, for several hours that morning before releasing him.

Police have released few details about the shooting. Sgt. Dan Cisar, police spokesman, said Thursday night he couldn't comment on the case.

Womochil's wife, Jeanette, said homicide detectives spoke with her Wednesday. She said detectives told her that her husband apparently was trying to break into a 1991 GMC Jimmy in which Morrison was sleeping. She said her husband had stolen car stereos in the past.

The sport utility vehicle's alarm went off. She said Morrison awoke and fired several shots, according to detectives, and her husband was hit four times - in the back, arm, neck and just above the heart.

The vehicle had tinted windows, she said. Had her husband known someone was inside, he would not have tried to break in, she said.

Jeanette Womochil said the detectives appeared to believe the shooting was justified, though she doesn't agree.

"He was at the wrong place at the wrong time," she said.

Morrison's attorney, Carl Cohen, said he would not discuss the case while the investigation continued.

"The only thing I can say is the investigation will show that there was no fault on behalf of my client," Cohen said.
