Armed man fends off robber & aids police in arrest

"Five arrested in early-morning theft"

RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA -- Five Rapid City men are facing multiple felony charges of burglary and assault after their arrests early Wednesday morning.

According to court reports in the case, Rapid City police officers and Pennington County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of an attempted theft of an all-terrain vehicle from a garage at a home on Cavalry Trail west of Rapid City about 4 a.m.

From a description provided by the homeowner, deputies stopped a car carrying five men headed toward Rapid City about one mile west of the city limits about 4:20 a.m.

Officers arrested Travis J. Holm, 19, Gary D. Bledsoe, 18, Elam R. Everingim, 19, Richard C. Glass, 24, and Ben M. Buell, 18.

According to reports, deputies and police officers found burglary tools in the car, along with items allegedly stolen in other reported burglaries.

The five each are charged with one count of third-degree burglary, two counts of fourth-degree burglary, and possession of weapons or burglary tools with intent to commit a burglary.

Bledsoe, the driver of the car, also is charged with two counts of aggravated assault for allegedly trying to run down the owner of the all-terrain vehicle during the alleged burglary.

The alleged assault occurred after the man confronted the five during the attempted theft of the ATV. The man reportedly fired a shotgun into the air as the suspects fled in the car.

Reports said the five could be linked to other recent vehicle break-ins in the Nemo Road area, based on other items found in the car.

The five men made their initial appearances in Pennington County Magistrate Court before Judge William Severns on Thursday.

Officials from the Pennington County Clerk of Courts Office said Friday they expected the cases to be transferred to another circuit within the state's Unified Judicial System because one of the victims of the alleged burglaries is a 7th Circuit Court official.

All five men remain in custody in Pennington County Jail.
