Sacramento police said a shop owner shot and killed a suspected burglar who dropped in through the store's ceiling early Monday.

The city's homicide unit is investigating the shooting. The owner was not arrested and the matter will be reviewed by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.

The shooting occurred at 4:36 a.m. at Video Store #6 at 5679 Stockton Blvd., said Sacramento Police Sgt. Daniel Hahn.

The owner, whose name was not immediately available, lives in the store and awoke to the sound of people on the roof, Hahn said. When he heard noise near the air conditioning grate, the man grabbed a cell phone and called 911, Hahn said. He also armed himself with a handgun.

The suspected burglar removed the grate and dropped through the hole, Hahn said. The shop owner, who was still on the phone with dispatchers, shot him.

Hahn said paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. Another person who was on the roof when the shooting occurred fled the scene and is still being sought, Hahn said.

The identity of the slain man was not immediately known.

Police confiscated the shop owner's gun pending the completion of their investigation, Hahn said.

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA -- A man allegedly trying to break into a video store was shot and killed by the store's owner early Monday, police said.

According to authorities, the man crawled through a vent on the roof of the store on Stockton Boulevard.

The owner was in the building at the time and called authorities.

He then armed himself with a handgun and confronted the suspect.

Police said the suspect came at the store owner who, fearing for his safety, fired his gun, killing the suspect.

Authorities believe a second suspect got away.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Many politicians are in the habit of laying it down as a self-evident proposition, that no people ought to be free till they are fit to use their freedom. The maxim is worthy of the fool in the old story, who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim. If men are to wait for liberty till they become wise and good in slavery, they may indeed wait forever. — LORD THOMAS MACAULAY
