Jimmy Dale Knighten, 43, of Parker County, Texas was shot dead at approximately 11 p.m. Sunday while allegedly attempting to attack his former wife's boyfriend in her home on Knob Hill in northeast Parker County, according to Sheriff Jay Brown.

Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 10:26 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from the boyfriend, Brown said.

"The ex-husband of this woman called, she had her boyfriend over, he called and said he was coming over to kill the boyfriend, so the person who had been threatened called 911 and told us about it," Brown said.

According to Brown, Knighten lived nearby and before the deputy arrived, he kicked the door in and came at the boyfriend with a knife.

"The boyfriend then shot the man with a handgun one time in the left side of the chest," Brown said.

Brown said the estranged couple had been divorced since September of 2000.

The shooter, whose name was not released, was not arrested as it appeared the shooting was in self defense, according to Brown.

"It is self defense at this time," Brown said. "It will be turned over to the grand jury to see whether or not to indict him."

It is believed to be the first death as a result of shooting in Parker County this year.
