Two robbers killed by
intended victims Originally ran here
as: Two men were killed last night when they were
shot by their intended victims in what police described as an apparent robbery
attempt in a South of Market live- work loft. The victims have not been identified and so
far, no charges have been filed against the two men who allegedly shot them.
San Francisco police Homicide Lt. Judie Pursell
said the incident started about 10:30 p.m. in a third- story loft at 175 Bluxome
St., just opposite the 6th Street off-ramp from Interstate 280.
The loft is occupied by concert promoter Brian
Walters, about 25, who was being visited by a friend, Detrick Washington, also
about 25, his girlfriend and her two sons, 3 and 5.
One of the shooting victims showed up for what
apparently was a business meeting with Walters that had been arranged earlier,
Pursell said. When the man left after 10 or 15 minutes, he was met at the door
by a second man, armed with a machete, Pursell said.
The two then returned and the first man
produced a handgun and demanded to know where Walters' safe was.
As one of the intruders ransacked the
downstairs, the other went upstairs where the woman and her children were. He
put duct tape on her mouth, put all three under a blanket and demanded they
remain quiet.
The safe, with an undisclosed amount of money
in it, was taken downstairs by the would-be robber who was armed with the gun.
As he tried to open the safe, he put his gun down. Washington grabbed it and got
the drop, temporarily, on the man, Pursell said.
When the second man came downstairs, Pursell
said, a scuffle ensued and Washington shot him. He died at the scene.
Washington then handed the gun to Walters so he
could call 911. While that was happening, another scuffle ensued and Walters
shot the second man, who later died at S.F. General Hospital, Pursell said.
Walters and Washington both received minor cuts
in the struggle, Pursell said. The woman and children were not hurt.
"It's still very confusing and it's going
to take a while to sort this all out," Pursell said. "It's a little
