DAVIE, FLORIDA -- A burglar who tangled with a homeowner was killed early this morning when the victim's gun went off during a struggle, police said.

Police Major Ed Taylor said the burglar was stealing tools from a backyard barn when he tripped a motion-sensing light.

The homeowner, Lawrence Venturi, 33, awoke, called 911, then took his handgun and went outside to investigate.

Venturi said the burglar, later identfied as Peter P. Grimo, 38, who had driven up in an old Pontiac, jumped him and during a struggle the pistol went off.

The shooting death on the 4900 block of Southwest 70th Avenue occurred around 2:20 a.m.

The homeowner's wife and two children, ages 4 and 5, were inside the home during the fracas, and were not injured.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the shooting death but said it appears to be a case of self-defense. The also said Grimo had a history of breaking and entering, but did not immediately elaborate.

Police advise homeowners in similar situations not to take matters into their own hands, and call the authorities instead.
