HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS -- A man was shot to death Thursday after he assaulted his former girlfriend and broke into her east Harris County home, sheriff's detectives said.

The man, 36. whose name was withheld pending notification of kin, died at 3:20 a.m. at Memorial Hermann Hospital. He was shot in the hands and chest.

Investigators were told the man assaulted the woman and entered her home in the 14100 block of Gainesville just north of the Cloverleaf area at 12:08 a.m. after she asked him to leave.

After she asked him again, officers were told, he struck her in the face, causing her to fall. He entered a bedroom, where a male friend of the woman was waiting, and struck him in the face.

That man, a Liberty County resident, 48, fired a handgun twice, striking the intruder.

The Harris County district attorney's office advised sending the case to a grand jury without charges.
