Response to: Sniper Rifles: The Lethal - And Legal - Weapons of War Original Op-Ed by Tom Diaz At http://web.tallahasseedemocrat.com/content/tallahassee/2001/08/22/opinion/0822.oped.diaz.htm

You have got to be kidding me! Tom Diaz just figured out that the .50 caliber BMG, which has been around since WWI, is an effective tool that "allow(s) sophisticated targets to be destroyed or disabled by a single soldier…" Am I to believe that Mr. Diaz, who is the senior policy analyst at the Violence Policy Center, just figured out that the equation, energy equals mass times the velocity of light squared, is suddenly relevant to social concerns?

Mr. Diaz is NOT getting enough oxygen to his brain! The military designed the weapon and many civilians, who have served, discovered that the .50 caliber BMG is expensive but fun to shoot. Yet, by some bizarre extrapolation, he says, put this weapon in civilian hands and "you have the perfect weapon for assassination and terrorism, for taking out armored limousines, shooting down helicopters, and destroying physical infrastructure."

The immediate questions then are: When (in the United States) have we had the illegal use of the .50 caliber BMG to destroy physical infrastructure, the shooting down of helicopters, or the taking out of armored limousines? Did I hear you say: IT HAS NOT HAPPENED!? Who has been assassinated by this horrible piece of dangerous equipment? Again, did I hear you say: NO ONE!? Who are those who will commit the acts of terrorism Mr. Diaz speaks of, using the .50 caliber BMG? Even a cursory examination of the facts will show that the American public has had in its possession for many years, many weapons designed by the military and capable of doing the same damage; just not at the range offered by the .50 caliber BMG. So, he really doesn’t know who these terrorists are, does he? Or is Mr. Diaz suggesting that law-abiding citizens who own these weapons are in fact terrorists? Since there is no proof that owners of the .50 caliber BMG rifle are in fact terrorists, we are drawn inexorably to consider one of the following conclusions:

Mr. Diaz’s article is the raving of a maniacal, phobia riddled psychotic mind in which he has loss contact with reality and is not able to function normally in society.

Mr. Diaz is a member of an anarchical conspiracy who hates a Constitutional Republic and as such fears an arm citizenry.

Since, Mr. Diaz has hidden behind your paper and there is no means by which I can communicate with him directly. I would hope you would forward these questions to him.

Mr. Diaz, are you a demented sociopath? Or, are you just a common traitor?
