Subject: Who's tricking whom?

To the editor,

In Bogus gun pitch deceives women (AJC, 11/08/2001), the author suggests that women have been tricked by the marketing departments of the gun manufacturers into believing they are vulnerable to bigger, stronger people who want to do bad things to them. Even if every statistic she cites is true, there remains the question: What's a woman to do?

There really are big, strong, evil people out there who want to do bad things to other people, including women. While the courts have repeatedly ruled that the police have no legal duty to protect the individual, you do have a moral duty to protect yourself and your family. Sam Colt called his new invention "the equalizer" for a reason. Oh, but that's just a marketing trick.

Assuming that there really are "tricks" in play here, do you want to be tricked into being prepared with the tools to defend against violent predators or do you want to be tricked into being a defenseless victim, at the mercy of violent predators? I think women can decide which strategy is of benefit to them.
