PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA -- A holdup suspect shot by a Swampoodle shopkeeper Wednesday night during a gun duel that left an employee badly wounded was charged yesterday with attempted murder, robbery and weapons offenses, police said.

Deshon Hairston, 39, was listed in fair condition yesterday at the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital.

Police said that Hairston drew a handgun when he and another man entered Corosito's Grocery at 24th Street and Indiana Avenue about 9 p.m. and that he started shooting as the owner, Jose Mata, 34, and an employee, Juan Duran, 29, were closing the store. Duran ran behind the counter, got a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol, and returned about five shots, wounding Hairston in the chest. One of Hairston's bullets struck Duran in the chest, police said. As gun smoke filled the air, both holdup men fled. Arriving officers rushed Duran to Temple University Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Police checking hospitals for the wounded gunman arrested Hairston, of the 2800 block of North 28th Street, as two men drove him onto hospital property in a black Cadillac for treatment. The two men were later released without charges. The other gunman in the robbery was sought yesterday.
