Subject: AJC ignoring scandal at Emory?

To the editor;

The New York Times ( Historian's Prizewinning Book on Guns Is Embroiled in a Scandal <http://www.nytimes.com/2001/12/08/books/08GUNS.html?searchpv=past7days> , 12/08/01) has become the latest in a long line of publications to report that Michael A. Bellesiles, author of "Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture", professor of history at Emory University, has been asked by his department head to write a detailed, point by point, defense of his book, currently the subject of severe criticism for possibly misreading, misrepresenting and some say outright manufacturing of nonexistent sources.

Although the AJC published glowing reviews of this book, which claimed that early Americans had few guns, most of which were broken and for which they had little use, no one reading this newspaper would have a clue that serious academicians are wondering out loud if he just made it all up to support his thesis. It is outrageous that this newspaper ignores a national controversy right here in our own backyard.
