Response to McDonald's Firing Employee Who Foiled a Robbery with a Gun

from Larry Savage

Originally published on this website June 29, 2000

In response to the story about McDonald's firing an employee who used a gun to foil a robbery, available at:

The restaurant owner is glad that the employee defended himself and foiled the robbery. They had been robbed at gunpoint before. Now the owner will be pressured to dismiss the employee because carrying firearms is against corporate policy. It's time to put pressure on McDonald's.

Most of these corporate giants are more concerned about what investors think than what customers think. You can contact McDonald's Investor Relations at:

My letter:

Jack M. Greenberg Chairman and CEO, McDonald's Corp. Kroc Drive Oak Brook, IL 60523

Dear Mr. Greenberg,

News reports indicate a self defense shooting by a McDonald's employee occurred during an armed robbery at your restaurant located at 5301 East Freeway, Houston, TX on June 28. The maintenance employee chose to carry a firearm due to the failure of McDonald's to maintain a safe work environment. Armed robberies have occurred in the past at this location. A recent robbery at a Wendy's in New York City resulted in the death of five employees.

News reports also indicate that despite the wishes of the restaurant owner, the employee may be dismissed due to McDonald's policy prohibiting the carrying of firearms by employees. It is disturbing that McDonald's would violate the basic human right of self defense and force employees in dangerous locations to become victims. You should be ashamed. Change your corporate policy.

Many politicians are in the habit of laying it down as a self-evident proposition, that no people ought to be free till they are fit to use their freedom. The maxim is worthy of the fool in the old story, who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim. If men are to wait for liberty till they become wise and good in slavery, they may indeed wait forever. LORD THOMAS MACAULAY
