Politicians and journalists often portray fiction as fact. It is easy to be opinionated, but hard to be informed. This came to mind as I listened to Virginia Democrats tell us we’d be safer if we were disarmed.

Fortunately, we’ve lived with firearms for several hundred years. We know some things that work. Here are a few inconvenient truths I’ve found after a few decades of study.

There is no doubt that self-defense is inconvenient, but I’d rather be inconvenienced now than be a helpless victim later.

It seems that each day brings news of another attack on unarmed civilians in a public place. Increasingly, these attacks are met with unexpected (to the killer) and successful armed resistance. Attacks on churches and religious groups have been brought to the forefront once again with the recent Texas shooting and assaults on Jews in New York.

Denver police filed the petition for the temporary extreme risk protection order Jan. 2 in Denver Probate Court for a man suspected of beating his wife and who made suicidal statements when contacted by officers, according to a copy of the petition obtained by The Denver Post.

Maybe your African safari is just a dream at this stage, but you can make it a reality. In fact, I recommend you do. The cost is much less than a guided North American mule deer or elk hunt. So why not edge closer to your dream safari by deciding which African cartridge/rifle you’ll shoot?

Perhaps the most famous African cartridge is the .375 H&H Magnum, but a couple of its offspring, the .416 Remington Magnum and .458 Winchester Magnum, offer more power and heavier bullets. Which would be best? Let’s examine each in depth and then you can pick your winner.

At a campaign stop in Montgomery, Alabama, Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg told the crowd that he did not want the average person in America owning and using weapons.

In response to a question about Jack Wilson, the man in the congregation of the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, Texas, who shot and killed an armed assailant who threatened the lives of over 200 congregants, Bloomberg said: “It’s the job of law enforcement to have guns and decide when to shoot. We just do not want the average citizen carrying a gun in a crowded place.”

Radio host and Second Amendment advocate Dana Loesch responded to critics of Jack Wilson, the Texas church congregant who killed an armed intruder during services last week.

Loesch said on "Tucker Carlson Tonight" Friday that gun control advocates and some media outlets are misguided to claim Wilson was in the wrong when he stopped the intruder, who killed two people at the church in White Settlement before he was killed by Wilson.

Host Tucker Carlson noted Arizona Republic columnist Elvia Diaz wrote in USA Today that she was "terrified" at the prospect so many civilians in the church were carrying guns.

I don’t go in for the New Year’s Resolution stuff usually. But a trip to the range the other day drove home a point to me and caused me to make one new resolution for 2020. That resolution is simply to practice more. During that trip to the range, I realized that my shooting skills had slipped just a bit, and it took quite a while (and a good deal of ammunition) to get back up to what I am capable of doing.

Broken Arrow State Sen. Nathan Dahm has filed a bill that would prevent lawmakers from creating a red flag law in an attempt to preempt a federal version of the law.

Seventeen states have red flag laws, which allow law enforcement or family members to petition a court to temporarily take away someone's firearms if that person is considered a danger to themselves or others.

Dahm's bill would prohibit the state from passing a red flag law or enforcing federal law.

A vigorous and reactionary movement has sprung up throughout Virginia to declare cities and counties “Second Amendment sanctuaries” that will not enforce gun-control laws that the Democratic-controlled General Assembly may pass.

Generating passion, hysteria and even personal threats, the ugly movement has driven throngs of people to show up at boards of supervisors meetings. Their numbers are remarkable — 400, 800, even 2,000 in attendance.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness. — Justice William O. Douglas, US Supreme Court (1939-75)
