The lawsuit, filed in the Federal Central District of California, follows a first-of-its-kind Second Amendment investigation launched by the DOJ on March 27, 2025. The probe was prompted by a wave of complaints alleging that Los Angeles County routinely stalled or ignored CCW applications, leaving residents, many in high-crime neighborhoods, unable to legally carry firearms for self-defense.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi emphasized the historic nature of the suit in a statement. “The Second Amendment protects the fundamental constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to bear arms,” Bondi said.

CA: DOJ Sues LA Sheriff Over Gun Permit Delays, Says 2A Violation Scope ‘Staggering’

If this is the first high-profile move fulfilling the mission of the DOJ’s “Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force” announced by Attorney General Pam Bondi in April, it’s a major offensive. The nine-page federal complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, does not mince words.

“The scope of this constitutional violation is staggering,” the complaint says. “Between January 2024 and March 2025, Defendants received 3,982 applications for new concealed carry licenses. Of these, they approved exactly two—a mere 0.05% approval rate that cannot be explained by legitimate disqualifying factors alone. This is not bureaucratic inefficiency; it is systematic obstruction of constitutional rights.”

After a heated floor debate, the final bill in a series of proposed gun control measures failed in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The legislation would have served to ban “machine gun conversion devices” also known as “switches” or “glock switches,” which allow standard pistols to fire over a thousand rounds per minute.

Debate on the topic brought a wide variety of viewpoints from both sides of the House, some measured and some emotional.

Proponents of the legislation say it’s a commonsense measure to reduce the potential destruction that can be inflicted by a single shooter in a short period.

A new fashion accessory is likely to make its debut when motorcycle fans arrive on Main Street for the 33rd annual Biketoberfest celebration, the first special event to unfold since the repeal of Florida’s previous ban on open carry for firearm owners.

When Biketoberfest opens its four-day run on Oct. 16, the prospect of the legally sanctioned presence of guns among tens of thousands of revelers has sparked reactions from merchants and attendees that range from acceptance to genuine concerns about the potential impact on the popular fall event.

House lawmakers on Tuesday passed a proposal mandating background checks for purchasers of any type of firearm in Pennsylvania, though the proposal faces long odds of passing in the Senate.

Pennsylvania already requires a background check for someone to obtain a handgun. But long guns, like rifles and shotguns, are exempt from that rule.

State Rep. Perry Warren, D-Bucks, sought to close the “loopholes” with his legislation, which he said he hopes would help reduce the roughly 1,600 Pennsylvanians who die from gun violence every year.

Less than a month after authorities arrested a Lehigh Acres man connected to the death of his stepfather, state prosecutors determined the shooter was justified in using deadly force.

Lee County sheriff's deputies on Aug. 31 arrested Isaiah Barsallo, 19, on his birthday. He faced one count of second-degree murder in the death of Damian Martin, 42. Authorities responded to the 700 block of Alabama Road, in Lehigh Acres, on Aug. 30.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has placed a professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies on leave after allegations surfaced that he was formally involved in a far-left gun club.

Professor Dwayne Dixon was put on leave earlier this week following reports of his alleged affiliation with “Redneck Revolt,” an organization that describes itself as an “anti-racist, anti-fascist, community defense formation,” the Daily Tar Heel reported.

UNC Vice Chancellor for Communications Dean Stoyer told the student newspaper Dixon’s leave follows “recent reports and expressions of concern regarding alleged advocacy of politically motivated violence.”

The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice filed its first-ever affirmative lawsuit supporting gun owners on September 30, targeting Los Angeles County for allegedly blocking concealed carry permits. The Civil Rights Division’s suit claims the Sheriff’s Department violated Second Amendment rights through excessive delays.

The lawsuit follows a March investigation into complaints about the processing times for permits. Federal attorneys analyzed over 8,000 applications and found systemic problems.

Only two permits were approved from those thousands of applications, according to the suit. The Sheriff’s Department scheduled approval interviews up to two years after receiving completed applications.

Swords, whose experience is in criminal law, explained to the council, "I know what crime is. I know what happens in apartment complexes, and bars, and behind bars, and hookah lounges, and car lots, and things like that. I know what real crime is. This isn't real crime."

Following an almost two-hour-long presentation that included a video of police officers disabling cameras at the request of the police chief and multiple instances of store staff assisting law enforcement, the council rejected the City's request, voting 4-2 to allow the store to retain its business license.

The administrative charges for both Wakefield and his employee are still outstanding, with a court date of October 20.

Some 1,858,763 federal background checks were processed through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System in September 2025. That was a 10.3 percent nosedive from the 2,072,550 logged in September 2024.

However, don't break out the sad music just yet, as the more important figure, that of checks used for likely gun sales, was up 2 percent compared to last September. When the National Shooting Sports Foundation adjusted the numbers for last month to remove gun permit checks and rechecks, the adjusted figure stands at 1,179,424, which is up from last year's September figures of 1,156,223.

Background checks via NICS, the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, are expected to continue for firearm purchases and transfers during a shutdown. Per the Department of Justice’s recent guidance:

...

Background check systems are generally considered essential. However, the NICS isn’t immune to shutdown impacts, as it pertains to interruptions in other related services.

These could include renewals of Federal Firearms Licenses, customer/FFL queries to the ATF, NFA processing manpower, import/export permits, or other connected administrative services that are limited by shortfalls of personnel during a shutdown.

Does the Stand Your Ground law mean I can use force anytime, anywhere?
Not exactly. Texas law says you don’t have to retreat before using force if you’re in a place where you have a legal right to be, like your home, vehicle, or workplace. But there must be an immediate threat, and your response must be reasonable and necessary.

2. What’s the difference between force and deadly force?
Force: Any physical contact used to stop a threat.
Deadly force: Force that can cause serious injury or death. Texas law allows deadly force only in specific situations, such as preventing murder, robbery, or aggravated assault.

The Department of Justice sued the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in federal court Tuesday, alleging the department has violated Californians’ Second Amendment rights.

In the lawsuit, filed in the Central District of California, the DOJ alleges LASD approved only two concealed carry weapons permits out of more than 8,000 applications over the course of 15 months, with interviews scheduled as far as two years out for applicants.

Today, Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) secured another landmark victory for individual liberty when Chief District Judge Reed O’Connor for the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Texas ruled that the federal ban on firearm possession, storage, and carry at United States Post Offices and related properties, including post office parking lots, violates the Second Amendment in the FPC case of Firearms Policy Coalition v. Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Ed.: Note: The injunction only applies to SAF/FPC members, due to SCOTUS recent crackdown on the scope of relief that is allowed.

When my husband and I started church hunting in Los Angeles almost 13 years ago, we were considering a place that was biblically sound, had a thriving children’s ministry, had good parking (I know, such an LA thing), and, most importantly, had armed security.

It was 2012, soon after the shooting at a church in Aurora, Colorado, where the pastor’s mother was shot and killed by a man who’d previously been to prison and had an ongoing dispute with another congregant. He was stopped after murdering her by an armed off-duty officer in attendance that day.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas has ruled in favor of the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners in a case challenging the ban on possessing and carrying firearms in United States Post Offices.

In granting summary judgment in favor of SAF, the court granted both declaratory and injunctive relief, declaring the ban unconstitutional and preventing its enforcement for the plaintiffs, including SAF members. Originally filed in June 2024, the lawsuit challenges the ban on firearms carry in U.S. Post Offices and on postal property. SAF is joined in the case, FPC v. Bondi, by the Firearms Policy Coalition and two private citizens.

DOJ Is Still Making Anti-Gun Decisions & We Need To Let Trump Know

President Trump made history when he signed the first executive order ever directing the Department of Justice (DOJ) to abolish gun control where possible. He promised gun owners he’d be the most pro-Second Amendment president in history — and in many ways, he’s delivered.

But here’s the problem: the DOJ under Attorney General Pam Bondi isn’t always following his lead. Too often, DOJ lawyers and bureaucrats are clinging to old Biden-era talking points instead of carrying out Trump’s pro-gun agenda. That leaves gun owners — especially younger ones — still fighting battles that should already be won.

Lawmakers in the state House passed legislation that would require background checks for the sale and transfer of rifles and shotguns, which is not currently required in Pennsylvania.

The 104-99 vote was one of three held Tuesday, Sept. 30, to try to toughen the commonwealth’s gun laws. They highlighted the complexity of passing firearms reforms in the narrowly split House, where the divide between rural and urban interests doesn’t always follow party lines.

The new legal center comes on the heels of significant court victories for Minnesota gun owners. The formation follows major wins including Worth v. Jacobson, where the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit struck down Minnesota’s age restriction on permits to carry, restoring rights for 18-20-year-olds, and Caucus v. Walz, which eliminated the binary trigger ban as a violation of Minnesota’s single subject clause.

Doar emphasized his continued commitment to defending constitutional rights through this new legal avenue. “This new chapter allows us to take the fight directly to government agencies and officials who seek to undermine our rights.

The old axiom to never bring a knife to a gun fight is generally a good one, as we’ve chronicled before. Now, two groups with deep ties to firearms are getting involved in the battle over California’s switchblade ban.

On September 26, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) filed an amicus brief with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in Knife Rights, Inc. v. Bonta, the challenge to California’s ban on switchblades.

The Governor-- Kamala Harris's former pick for Vice President in 2024-- and DFL leaders proposed a slate of anti-gun restrictions, including a ban on "assault weapons and high-capacity magazines," and outlawing Binary triggers. Other proposed legislative "fixes" to be debated include one to "eliminate the ghost gun loophole and plans to beef up the state's "red flag" Extreme Risk Protection Order process.

To sway some Republican support, the agenda is also set to explore an expansion in school safety funding and mental health treatment, as well as an increase in criminal penalties for violent offenses committed with a firearm.
