Earlier this week, I attended the theatrical debut of Dinesh D’Souza’s compelling new documentary Police State. As much as I liked the movie, there was one subject left unexplored: the ironic fact that, today, among those most vulnerable to the “police state” are local police.

In the wake of a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, that killed 18 people, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has called for more involuntary institutionalization. "We do need more institutionalization," DeSantis said during a CNN interview last week. "There are some people who are dangerous to society. A lot of them get put back on the streets. [It] will require more resources, but I think that that's appropriate."

He immediately and forcefully stated that mass murder does not override the Constitution, and contrary to Democratic policy, emotion should not be used to enact laws that would never be acceptable in a quiet and reasoned debate. I came of age in the 1970s. Like most folks of my era, we didn’t have a whole lot of stuff. Santa Claus brought me a Powerline 880 pellet rifle that was my constant companion, but I had to work to feed it. I made $1.50 cutting my family’s grass every couple weeks. That princely sum kept me in plastic models and comic books. It also bought my ammunition — .177-caliber pure lead pellets came a couple hundred to a box.

A more compact version of the company's classic PT-92 series 9mm, the 917C long ago faded away from the Taurus catalog but is now back and better than ever. As a quick history lesson, Taurus has been around since 1939 but only got its start in semi-auto pistols back in 1980 when it acquired the old Beretta concern in Brazil. The Sao Paulo factory, set up the decade prior to crank out domestic variants of the Beretta Model 92 as the M975 for the Brazilian military and police, was fundamentally a turnkey affair, and in no time Taurus was making the PT-92 (fixed sights) and PT-99 (adjustable sights) pistols, which were very close clones but at a fraction of the cost.

Veterans from American Legion Post 119 are again hosting their annual junior air rifle marksmanship program in their hall on Greenstone Road in Placerville.

Organizers say the program is designed to build confidence, foster attention to detail and develop athleticism, all through marksmanship training. Participants practice shooting from three positions — prone, kneeling and standing, just like in the Olympics.

While the targets they use are about the size of a quarter, some of the program's more accomplished shooters can group their shots in the size of a dime from all three positions.

The team competes nationally through the Civilian Marksmanship Program, a national nonprofit foundation established in 1996 by federal law.
