In a weird way, I guess it makes sense that the Florida Department of Agriculture oversees the granting of concealed weapons permits. There always seems to be a bumper crop of guns in these parts.

There are currently about 1.9 million people licensed in the state to conceal and carry.

With that in mind, it’s appropriate that the race between Republican State Rep. Matt Caldwell and Democrat Nikki Fried to be the state’s next agriculture commissioner is as much about guns, maybe moreso, than strawberries or citrus greening.

As the Tampa Bay Times reported, it’s the one race where guns are the dominating issue in advance of the Nov. 6 general election.

Chris Gambill is asking why he got an “F” from the National Rifle Association’s Political Victory Fund.

That’s easy.

Gambill supports the extreme gun control agenda backed by NYC anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg.
Gambill wants to ban commonly owned standard capacity magazines.
Gambill wants to ban the nation’s most popular all-purpose sporting and self-defense rifle.
Gambill wants to criminalize private firearm transfers between lifelong friends and many family members.
Even easier? Voting for “A” rated and NRA-endorsed candidate Jon Ford.

A trucker was uninjured Tuesday morning after defending himself against an attacker at a gas station in Florida.

The incident happened at around 2:15 a.m. in Northeast Miami-Dade, Florida.

Miami-Dade Police say that the trucker was standing outside his rig speaking to someone at a 7-eleven at 1000 Northeast 215th Street when a man suddenly came up and attacked him. Luckily, the truck driver was armed and was able to pull out his gun, opening fire on the assailant, who promptly fled to the 7-eleven building to find help.

David Schechter, a journalist for Dallas, Texas-based ABC affiliate WFAA-TV takes a look at the reasons to own an AR-15 as part of his Verify program, a news segment that takes viewers questions.

The question posed came from Allison, a self-described conservative who says she supports the right to keep and bear arms but has some qualms about why, specifically, an AR-15 should be available.

To answer that, they head to Jerah Hutchins, a certified firearms instructor who walks them through shooting an AR at an area range– which Allison seems to really enjoy, but she is still on the fence.

Bristol County DA Thomas M. Quinn III said his office has determined that a cab driver acted in self-defense when he shot and killed one of two men trying to rob him during a botched Aug. 10 holdup in New Bedford.

“After a thorough investigation, it is clear that the cab driver acted in lawful self-defense and the use of deadly force was justified under the circumstances,” Quinn said in a statement released to the media Wednesday at the Superior Court arraignment of 23-year-old New Bedford resident Kyle S. Dawson, the surviving robbery suspect.

Opponents says the initiative criminalizes self-defense.

“It’s extremely aggressive and oppressive for gun rights,” said Alan Gotlieb, the founder of the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation.

He says if you’re 18 - old enough to vote or serve in the military - you shouldn’t be barred from buying a semi-automatic rifle.

“Is that fair or right?" Gottlieb asked. "No, it’s not. None of that keeps guns out of the hands of criminals. ”

Two signs outside two metro-area churches display very different messages.

Pastor Tom Vineyard, from Higher Plain Baptist Church, and the Rev. Lori Walke, of Mayflower Congregational UCC, have different views on a new gun law that goes into effect Thursday.

"It saves lives," Vineyard said.

"More guns make places more dangerous," Walke said.

House Bill 2632 adds "places of worship" to the list of places where Oklahomans would have criminal and civil immunity if they used deadly force as a result of self defense -- like in the case of a potential mass shooting.

He said that in his own state there is “obvious media bias in some publications about a gun control initiative on the ballot.”

“All five major law enforcement groups in the state, representing thousands of rank-and-file lawmen and women, are opposed to the measure,” Gottlieb said, “but the media downplayed their importance, referring to them as a ‘handful of law enforcement groups,’ or ‘some law enforcement groups,’ while vastly inflating the importance of three officials, including a single county sheriff, who are supporting the initiative.”

The Firearms Policy Coalition, a gun rights group, jumped into the fray as well, noting that gun control advocates have criticized justices and constitutional scholars who insist on sticking to the original meaning of the Constitution’s words.

“So, is everyone a textualist/originalist now?” the firearms coalition asked on Twitter, referencing the Second Amendment’s language that gun rights “shall not be infringed.” “Let’s go back to that whole, ‘shall not be infringed’ thing.”

Voters in at least four counties around the state have received political mailers from an unknown source attacking Republican U.S. Senate candidate Josh Hawley on guns — and implying that they should support a third-party or independent candidate.

The mailers fail to identify who paid for them, which is required by law. But they appear to be connected to mailers attacking GOP senate candidates in Montana and Indiana.

Hawley, the state’s attorney general, is running against incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in one of the most hotly contested Senate campaigns in the country.

I do not believe in getting rid of the Second Amendment. As an indigenous woman with hunter/fisher family in Alaska, I understand how hunting holds a prominence for families all over. My father owns a gun for the protection of our family. One of my good friends is a Marine Corps officer and has a concealed carry license. I understand that people want to maintain this right.

However, this does not mean that we should not strengthen securities in maintaining and handling firearms.

“Part of the reason majority opinions on gun control legislation aren’t turning into policy is that gun owners are a very strong political group who hold a lot of weight and hold a lot of influence despite being a minority in American politics,” said Abbie Vegter, a graduate student at the University of Kansas who worked on the study.

To Swartz, the argument doesn’t totally make sense, saying, "The state only has a jury has a jury trial when the defendant asks for a jury trial. If the defendant doesn't ask for one, the state can't demand that they get one on their own. That's not the way it works."

Full disclosure, Swartz had concerns about changes to the stand your ground law from the beginning.

A South Florida organization of prosecutors that includes Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle is telling the Florida Supreme Court that the latest version of the state’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law is unconstitutional.

The League of Prosecutors, in newly filed court documents, asked justices to strike down the law because it unlawfully forces state attorneys to try cases involving self-defense claims before a judge, not a jury. “There is nothing specialized or unique about this defense that the common juror cannot understand,” according to the brief filed late Friday.

In a market flooded with specialized and sometimes not so useful EDC gear, PHLSTER Holsters may have found the Goldilocks zone. The PHLSTER Flex gives concealed carriers an easy and versatile new option for carrying their guns and gear. Laser cut from lightweight, breathable Hypalon plastic, the Flex allows users to configure their EDC gear into “one grab-and-go” package. In other words, it’s a platform for holding a pistol and other self-defense tools.

She … does not answer directly.

This is no academic question for Georgia gun owners either, as their gubernatorial election is a pure toss-up right now. In fact, the latest poll has Abrams ahead by a point, the first time she’s led in any survey in three months. If a blue wave arrives next week, there’s every reason to believe she’s the next governor.

So the right to bear arms and the right of the government to regulate the sale of arms can coexist. And must.

What we need now are small, but meaningful, steps toward sensible gun safety laws, like a phase-in of required “smart guns.” These are guns which can be fired only by the owner, with his ID or fingerprints — an owner who who has passed all background checks.

It is long past time for rational action on gun laws in America. And starting small is OK. We can’t fix the evil in human hearts, but we need not empower it.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? — Patrick Henry, 3 J. Elliot, Debates in the Several State Conventions 45, 2d ed. Philadelphia, 1836
