A 24-year-old Little Rock man who said he fired into a moving car to protect himself and a friend was cleared of murder charges for killing a man in the vehicle by Pulaski County Circuit Judge Leon Johnson, a ruling that ended Key'Andre Marcell Collin's two-day jury trial Wednesday after prosecutors had rested their case against him.

Collins told Little Rock police that he was at the Beacon Hill apartments, 1801 Reservoir Road, in July 2022 to change the oil of a friend's car. He said he was under the hood when he heard gunshots.

“It ended up resulting in a shooting; a shooting where he shot and killed both of them. He remained on the scene,” recalled Rubinstein, “He called 911 after shooting the first victim, and was on the phone during the shooting of the second victim. He stayed there until police arrived, and came down to the police station. He gave a lengthy interview alleging that he was acting in self-defense.”

The DA says Taylor’s self-defense claim and the lack of video evidence is what caused him and the Grand Junction Police Department to bring the case to a grand jury and let them decide if charges should be brought on the two counts of second-degree murder.

A tragic incident in High Point has led to charges against Julian Helbert, 26, of Kernersville, following the shooting death of his toddler. Investigators from the High Point Police Department’s Special Victims Unit found that a child under 10 years old had fired the shot, ultimately causing the toddler’s death.

Authorities determined that Helbert failed to secure a loaded firearm properly, enabling access to the weapon. This oversight resulted in the fatal incident and prompted several serious charges against him. Helbert faces counts of involuntary manslaughter, felony child abuse, and unsafe firearm storage to protect minors.

Over a three-year period beginning in 2021, 353 petitions were filed under Colorado’s red flag law, and 39% of those petitions led to firearms being relinquished, according to research our group published in Preventive Medicine Reports.

Red flag laws are also known as extreme risk protection orders. These orders temporarily bar individuals deemed by a judge to be at risk of violence from buying or possessing firearms.

We found that 54.6% of petitions across Colorado were filed by law enforcement. These petitions were granted 94.3% of the time.

Petitions filed by people outside of law enforcement were granted just 35% of the time.

Fayetteville City Councilwoman Courtney Banks-McLaughlin is one of millions of Americans affected personally by gun violence, having lost a teenage daughter to this uniquely American epidemic.

Now, she is calling for action on a category of weapons that is growing fast in our state and in our country. They are ghost guns — custom-made firearms that can be purchased online and assembled at home from kits. The guns do not have serial numbers, making them untraceable by law enforcement.

Joel Shenk believes his hammer is an instrument of peace.

On an October day, he repeatedly smashed it down into an anvil at Toledo Mennonite Church, where he serves as a pastor. The red-hot metal on the receiving end once had a life as a weapon.

“It becomes in a way like Play-Doh,” he said, as he loaded a rifle barrel into the roaring forge. “And you can slowly shape it into a different form.”

A recent national poll found that a narrow majority of respondents were in favor of more restrictions on guns and a ban on common semi-auto firearms.

Gallup's October Crime poll found that 56 percent of the U.S. adults they spoke to support stricter laws on the sale of guns in general. However, the firm also noted a steady decline from October 2022—when 57 percent favored tougher laws—to May 2022 (66 percent) and 1990 (76 percent).

"For now, gun policy does not rank highly among the most important problems on Americans’ minds," observed Gallup.

Promising "Duty grade performance and entry-level cost," Patriot Ordnance Factory has a more entry-level lightweight .308 AR on the schedule for 2025.

The Arizona-based company pioneered the "small frame" AR-10(ish) rifle with the Revolution series in 2016 and doubled down on it with direct-impingement and 6.5CM offerings in 2019. It has similar dimensions and weight to an AR-15 but is chambered in a much more serious caliber than 5.56, and it scratches many itches. While well-liked, the Revolution was, and still is, a bit pricey, with a "good deal" ask of around $2,500.

Colorado voters approved Proposition KK on Election Day, adding a 6.5% excise tax on gun and ammunition sales.

Colorado is not the first state to impose such a tax, but it is the first one to do so via a citizen’s vote.

California, the only other state with an excise tax on gun sales, passed a similar 11% excise tax through Assembly Bill 28 which Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law. Because of Colorado’s unique Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), certain tax increases like those included in Proposition KK require voter approval.

Major players in the American firearms industry have been accused of leaking sensitive customer data to political operatives, potentially breaching privacy laws and shaking trust within the gun-owning community. A deep investigation by ProPublica journalist Corey G. Johnson has uncovered decades of covert data sharing by gun manufacturers with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), an influential trade group. The findings have sparked outrage and calls for accountability, with U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal leading the charge against what he terms an “invasive and dangerous” intrusion into customer privacy.

A federal judge has ruled against Attorney General Letitia James and other New York officials, rejecting their motion to dismiss a constitutional challenge to the state’s ban on bulletproof vests and protective body armor.

U.S. District Court Judge John Sinatra Jr. affirmed plaintiffs standing to sue the state over the restrictions.

“Here, plaintiffs have demonstrated an injury in fact…They allege an intention to engage in a course of conduct arguably protected by the Second Amendment but proscribed by New York law,” Sinatra wrote in a 19-page ruling.

Gallup Poll: Only 20% of Americans support a total gun ban

According to the survey, only 20% of people currently support the idea of banning gun ownership altogether. As for "assault weapons," support for their ban has dropped to 52%, down considerably from the 61% recorded in 2019.

Support for a gun ban is especially low even among Democrats, where only 33% back such a measure. This poses a dilemma for the party: the policies proposed by its leadership seem disconnected from an electoral base that has shown inclinations toward more moderate positions.

I Believe We Shouldn’t Own Guns. I’m Learning How To Shoot One Anyway

I didn’t grow up with guns. I grew up in an Italian-American family in Florida — two cultures people often associate with gun ownership — but we were never a “gun family,” even though my dad always kept one in his glove box. When I was old enough to finally notice, I’d ask him questions about it, ever curious about the power it provided and the reason he had it. For his work as a private investigator then, he had it solely for protection, but he never loved it. He never showed the enthusiasm men often showed towards their guns in movies or the way my friends would talk about their dads taking them shooting.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence. —CHARLES A. BEARD
