The Houghton County Board of Commissioners tabled a resolution to declare the county a Second Amendment sanctuary county.

The issue also prompted a rally by about 40 residents in support of the resolution prior to Tuesday’s meeting. The movement asks counties to declare they will not enforce gun control laws they deem unconstitutional.

The non-binding resolutions have sprung up in more than 20 states. Around 10 counties in Michigan have passed similar resolutions, including Delta County. A number of others are considering or have passed modified versions endorsing constitutional rights.

The Montmorency County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday joined several other counties in Northeast Michigan in becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary.

By passing the resolution, the board affirms its support for the Sheriff and the Prosecutor “in the exercise of their sound discretion to not enforce against any citizen an unconstitutional firearms law.”

Commissioners approved the resolution 3 to 2 with Chairman Bert LaFleche and Commissioner Gary Girardin casting the dissenting votes. Vice Chairman Daryl Peterson and Commissioners Don Edwards and Dave Wagner voted in favor of the resolution.

The Huron County Board of Commissioners will consider a resolution at a future meeting about whether to make the county a second amendment sanctuary.

As reported on by other media outlets, a growing number of Michigan counties are either passing or considering resolutions designating themselves as “second amendment sanctuaries,” which call for local law enforcement agencies to not enforce any “unconstitutional firearm laws against citizens."

The considerations come as the state of Virginia is working to pass gun control legislation, which prompted an open-carry rally to take place in the state capital of Richmond in January.

A growing wave of concern over the undermining of firearms owners’ Constitutional rights reached the Indiana County Court House on Wednesday, when representatives of the Indiana County Second Amendment Sanctuary group asked the county commissioners to stand with them.

The talk among the residents and the commissioners was not confrontational but concluded with Commissioners Robin Gorman and Sherene Hess — in the absence of Chairman Michael Keith — making clear that they would not hastily commit the county to a formal position on the issue.

The Culpeper County 2A Facebook group had five rules.

Rule one was "Get Busy - Follow the Action Plan and take the necessary steps to protect our rights. Sharing memes isn't enough. We need coordinated action."

Rule two was "Do Not Give Up - We're in the fight of our lives. Act accordingly. Never surrender."

At some point in late January the rules changed, and rule two became "No racism". But the basic purpose remained: Culpeper County 2A (the 2A stands for Second Amendment) was founded with the aim of resisting gun control bills working their way through the Virginia state legislature.

But rather than threatening to flout the law, the better route is the one taken by Elko County commissioners recently and that is to challenge the law in the courts. The commissioners voted to join a lawsuit filed in December by attorneys for NevadansCAN (Citizens Action Network) that argues the “Red Flag” section of Assembly Bill 291, which was passed on a near party-line vote with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed, is unconstitutional because it violates the right to due process and the right to keep and bear arms — as guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Nevada Constitution, which states, “Every citizen has the right to keep and bear arms for security and defense …”
