Roy Huntington describes the inherent, primal wonder of a firearm as its ability to “smite from a distance.” This sense of awe only increases with the distance from which the smitation is issued, which explains much of the incredible popularity currently enjoyed by precision shooting. Virginia House Democrats passed an “assault firearm” ban Friday that would prohibit semiautomatic centerfire rifles that use a detachable magazine and have threaded barrels.

In lieu of a threaded barrel, the text of the ban–HB 2–makes clear the semiautomatic centerfire rifle falls into the prohibited category if it has a vertical fore grip or a “sound suppressor” or a “muzzle brake” or “muzzle compensator” or a “folding, telescoping, or collapsible [rear] stock,” among other features.

Today, Governor Kristi Noem signed two pro-Second Amendment bills into law. SB 39 prohibits a homeowners' association from placing restrictions on firearms or firearm ammunition. And HB 1035 extends the period of renewal for an enhanced permit to carry a concealed pistol. “South Dakota is a Second Amendment haven,” said Governor Noem. “These two bills strengthen our reputation as the most pro-Second Amendment state in the nation. I will always be proud to stand for the God-given right of every American to keep and bear arms.”

The state Senate on Thursday night approved a sweeping overhaul of state firearms laws, setting up talks with the House that could lead to a major new law later this spring or summer. The Senate bill seeks to rein in untraceable ghost guns, bans carrying firearms in government administrative buildings, gives firearm licensing authorities access to some of an applicant's mental health hospitalization history, and expands the list of people who can petition the court to take away someone's guns if they are deemed dangerous.

A black target slightly bigger than a quarter presents itself 10 meters away down range at an indoor practice facility at Fort Moore in Georgia.

Sergeants Sagen Maddalena and Ivan Roe, with an air rifle in hand, stack shots on top of a bullseye roughly the size of a period.

Both soldiers are part of the Army Marksmanship Unit located at Fort Moore. The unit was built in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to compete with the Soviets at the time.

Both Maddalena and Roe recently qualified to represent Team USA in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris for the 10 meter air rifle event.
