I have previously written about “off-body carry” in this column, dealing with carrying a gun in backpacks and bags and purses, but I’ve become aware of a few recent products that have made me want to address a subset of off-body carry—I guess I’ll call it “in-hand carry.” Occasionally, you’ll find backpacks and purses swinging from your hand, but mostly they are bigger bags and will be slung across your body. However, there are a number of smaller cases that aren’t meant to hang from anywhere on your body but your hand. I want to talk about them, as well as a few dos and don’ts. |

“This is a proposal I have to kind of address what the Eighth Circuit had held and then reenact the substantive provision at the heart of the Second Amendment Preservation Act,” Hardwick said.
Hardwick believes the language of his bill would not be considered unconstitutional. HB 1175 would restrict state agencies from enforcing or aiding in the enforcement of federal gun laws that differ from Missouri’s laws.
Hardwick’s bill would also allow Missourians the ability to sue law enforcement agencies for up to $50,000 per occurrence should they work to enforce or aid in the enforcement of federal gun laws. |

There has been discussion around the Second Amendment: what it is, what is one’s understanding regarding its implementation, and more. But what does this amendment really say, and what is its real meaning? The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights. Drafted primarily by James Madison, its creation was shaped by a young nation’s desire to prevent tyranny and ensure security through local militias. At the time, the recent memory of British occupation and the Revolutionary War deeply influenced political thinking. |

“We will also teach gun safety. We will take them to the firing range, help familiarize them with whatever gun they bring to the class, and teach them to shoot.” The class is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the firing range, 200 Foster Mound Road. “This class is for adults only. There is no limit on the age of people who can participate, but you must be at least 21,” he said.

A Montana man was charged by a grizzly bear Friday while looking for shed antlers near Dupuyer. The man shot and killed the bear mid-charge, and he walked away from the incident uninjured, according to a press release from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. This marks the first fatal encounter with a bear in North America’s grizzly country in 2025. The first run-in to take place in 2024 occurred in Montana as well, and it also involved a shed hunter who killed the bear in self-defense. |

In a statement announcing the letter, Gottlieb adds, “The time has come to put the anti-rights leadership in these states on notice that their crusade to destroy the individual rights protected by the Second Amendment is finished. On behalf of our members and supporters, we’re hopeful Attorney General Bondi brings the full force of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division against these Draconian gun control laws wherever they have been enacted. |

A bill to remove short-barreled guns from a state list of prohibited weapons received initial approval in the Texas Senate on Monday afternoon.
Senate Bill 1596 passed on second reading by a vote of 21 to 10.
An identical House bill, HB 259, and other gun-related bills up for public hearing on Monday drew families from Uvalde and Santa Fe to the state Capitol in Austin.
Currently in Texas, legally possessing a short-barreled firearm comes with restrictions. They must be registered with the federal government, which involves a background check and paying $200, or must be classified as a curio or relic. |

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) introduced the Why Does the IRS Need Guns Act on Monday.
The bill:
Prohibits the IRS from using appropriated funds to purchase, receive, or store any firearm or ammunition
Requires the IRS to transfer to the GSA any firearms or ammunition owned or under the control of the IRS
Within 30 days of transfer, GSA must initiate the sale or auction of any firearms to licensed dealers and the auction of any ammo to the general public
Moore told 1819 News on Monday, “We’re going to try to force them to get rid of the ammunition and weapons they’ve bought since 2020.” |

The Missouri House just sent a clear message: gun rights shouldn’t stop at the bus stop.
In a 106-45 vote on Thursday, lawmakers passed House Bill 328, a measure that would legalize concealed carry on public transit and lower the minimum age for a concealed carry permit from 19 to 18. The bill now heads to the Missouri Senate for consideration.
Currently, even Missourians with valid concealed carry permits are barred from bringing firearms onto public transportation. But that could soon change if HB 328 becomes law. |

The AR-15 continues to be one of the most popular platforms in the United States, and Smith & Wesson’s M&P 15 Sport series is one of the most favored ARs on the market.
It is easy to see why. Backed by the all-American brand’s reputation and warranty, it’s also a versatile and easily customizable platform. Last year, Smith & Wesson introduced the upgraded M&P 15 Sport III at a lower price than its predecessors, adding affordability to the list of reasons you should check out a S&W M&P 15 rifle. We finally got some range time with the new rifle and have a report. |

Companion bills in the House and Senate are intended to protect Second Amendment rights for veterans.
The bills would prevent Veterans Affairs from reporting veterans’ names to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System as part of some benefit-related actions.
Bill authors said the NICS reporting in those cases strips veterans of their Second Amendment rights to buy and own a gun without the due process afforded to other Americans. |

After turning on my TV this morning, the first news story to hit my ears was about how Colorado had just passed the most restrictive gun laws in the United States. I must admit it made me both a bit sad and angry at the same time.
My last duty station was at FT Carson in Colorado, just outside of beautiful Colorado Springs. It was a gunslinger’s paradise. Hell, the place was named after the legendary Kit Carson, who was known for using many firearms in his career as a trapper, scout, soldier, and explorer. Among these were the renowned Hawken rifles, highly regarded among mountain men for their reliability and craftsmanship. And folks, if you’ve never been there, there are many mountains in Colorado. |

Earlier this year Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., introduced H.R.38, legislation that would allow concealed carry permit holders in one state to exercise their right to carry in other states.
Despite introducing a similar bill every year for nearly a decade without success, Hudson believes that the House, and even the Senate, will approve it this time. The bill made it through the House Judiciary Committee 18-9 on March 25.
A similar version made it through the committee in 2017.
“We got it through the Judiciary Committee, we got it through the House. But the Senate wouldn’t move it,” Hudson told Fox News last week. |

As U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi prepares to lead the Justice Department’s newly formed “Second Amendment Task Force,” the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) has called for a focused investigation into states with stringent gun control measures.
In a letter addressed to Attorney General Bondi, CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb identified 12 states, all under Democratic control, as prime targets for the task force’s scrutiny. These states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Washington, have implemented what the CCRKBA considers “egregious Second Amendment violations.” |

Virginia’s House of Delegates reconvened to attempt to override 13 of the 157 bills vetoed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin. Of those “baker’s dozen,” one was a direct attack on the right to keep and bear arms. That bill, HB 1607, was an attempt to ban the sale and manufacture of Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) and standard-capacity magazines. That California-style gun control bill also included a provision to make it illegal for an adult under the age of 21 to even possess the most-popular selling centerfire rifle in America.
HB 1607 was narrowly passed in a 50-48 vote in the House of Delegates and 21-15 vote in the Senate. That vote count tracks closely to the composition of Virginia’s Assembly, which itself is narrowly controlled by Democrats. |

You almost have to admire the persistence. When gun-loving Missouri Republicans don’t succeed in their first or second attempts at making life more dangerous for the state’s bus and rail riders, you can be sure they will try, try again. They’re trying again. The Missouri House last week passed a bill that would allow passengers to carry concealed guns with them on public transit. Right now that’s illegal. It ought to stay that way. |

Designed by popular Croatian gunmaker HS Produkt, the Springfield Armory Kuna (Croatian for "Pine Marten," the national animal of that country) sub-gun first surfaced last October when it beat the top-shelf B&T APC40 and Steyr M40 for a contract with the PMESP, the Sao Paulo Military Police – the largest police force in Brazil. Chambered in .40 S&W, it also appeared at EnforceTac in Germany back in February with a promised 9mm variant inbound as well. The word was that the svelte little burp gun, using an advanced roller-locked system of operation, had been developed with international counter-terror teams in mind. |
