An Ohio representative is working to enshrine into state law the right of college students to carry nonlethal self-defense tools on campus.
Rep. Levi Dean (R-Xenia) introduced House Bill 949, dubbed the Campus Self-Defense Act, on May 19. The proposal would bar institutions of higher education from banning adults who are lawfully present on school grounds from possessing nonlethal self-defense tools, such as pepper spray and tasers.
“Our universities should be places where students can pursue their education, interests, and future careers without fear for their personal safety,” Dean said in a statement. |

It would be difficult to have a stand your ground defense hold up,” Blau said.
“At trial, I’m sure the defense will be self-defense. What’s going to make that difficult? He told the police that he didn’t see a weapon in the hand of the victim,” Blau said.
Blau also explained that while Oklahoma’s Castle Doctrine allows homeowners to use force against intruders in their primary residence, the situation is different for a vacant house. |

Hours after Democratic Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed legislation Tuesday that could ban the sale of Glock pistols, pro-Second Amendment organizations announced they would file suit to block the law.
Moore became the second governor to enact a ban on so-called “machine gun convertible pistols” Tuesday, following Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who signed a similar ban in October 2025, while a similar bill is under consideration in Connecticut. The National Rifle Association announced its intentions to sue Tuesday. |

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation that would permanently end the long-standing federal practice of stripping veterans of their right to keep and bear arms simply because they need help managing their Department of Veterans Affairs benefits.
H.R. 1041, the Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act, addresses a decades-old VA policy under which veterans assigned a fiduciary to help manage their VA benefits were automatically reported to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System as prohibited persons — losing their right to purchase or possess firearms in the process. The policy applied even when the fiduciary appointment had nothing to do with mental competency related to firearms ownership. |

After the Supreme Court clarified the constitutional test for gun control laws in 2022, many longstanding restrictions on the right to arms looked newly vulnerable. Second Amendment groups jumped at the opportunity, filing one lawsuit after another in cases that frequently pitted them against the Biden administration.
Those groups now have a powerful ally in the Trump administration, which has filed several lawsuits aimed at vindicating Americans' gun rights, including two filed last week in Colorado. But even as the Justice Department advertises its commitment to defending the Second Amendment, its position in other gun cases belies that stance. |

Pro-Second Amendment organizations said they would launch court challenges against a bill in Rhode Island that would give owners of modern semiautomatic firearms six months to dispose of them.
Democratic Rhode Island state Sen. Tiara Mack introduced S2710 on Feb. 27 with eight co-sponsors, legislation that tightens the state’s ban on so-called “assault weapons” by prohibiting possession of the firearms. Under the terms of the legislation, those who own prohibited firearms would have until Dec. 31 to either sell them to a licensed dealer or transfer them to an out-of-state resident who could legally own them, something pro-Second Amendment organizations say would violate Americans’ Second Amendment rights. |

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners have filed a lawsuit challenging Maryland's newly signed Glock ban. The filing comes in immediate response to Gov. Wes Moore signing the bill into law today.
Gov. Moore signed into law Senate Bill 334, which states a person "…may not manufacture, sell, offer for sale, purchase, receive, or transfer a machine gun convertible pistol." It further defines a "machine gun convertible pistol" as a firearm that contains a cruciform trigger bar. The ban goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2027. |

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is applauding the decision by at least four county prosecutors in Virginia to not enforce the ban on so-called "assault firearms" and original capacity magazines, signed into law by Democrat Gov. Abigail Spanberger
Prosecutors in Powhatan, Pulaski, Smyth and Spotsylvania counties say the ban violates the Second Amendment. Those Commonwealth attorneys are Phillip Blevins Jr. (Smyth County), Rob Cerullo (Powhatan County), Justin L. Griffin (Pulaski County), and Ryan Mehaffey (Spotsylvania County). The Washington Times is reporting that Scott County Commonwealth's Attorney Kyle Kilgore "made similar remarks." |

Maryland just banned one of the most popular handguns in America, and gun rights groups sued before the ink was dry.
Gov. Wes Moore signed Senate Bill 334 into law on Tuesday. Within minutes, the National Rifle Association, the Second Amendment Foundation, and the Firearms Policy Coalition filed a federal lawsuit to stop it.
The law targets what it calls a “machine gun convertible pistol.” That label covers any semiautomatic pistol with a cruciform trigger bar. In plain terms, that sweeps in nearly every Glock and Glock-style pistol sold today, along with popular models like the Palmetto State Armory Dagger, the Ruger RXM, and many Shadow Systems handguns. |

Two major gun-rights organizations are asking the Supreme Court to take up a challenge to the Maryland law banning concealed carry in so-called “sensitive places” — a law that effectively replaced the state’s pre-Bruen discretionary permit system with a new framework that bans carry in most locations where permit holders would actually want to carry.
On May 20, the Second Amendment Foundation, Firearms Policy Coalition, Maryland Shall Issue, the Maryland State Rifle & Pistol Association, and four individual plaintiffs filed the cert petition asking the Supreme Court to consider the case. |

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger has signed legislation banning the sale and manufacture of certain semi-automatic firearms, prompting immediate lawsuits from gun-rights groups.
The limits on “ assault firearms,” as they are described by the legislation, are among two dozen new restrictions and regulations on guns enacted by the Democratic governor in her first few months in office. That marks a sharp policy reversal from her Republican predecessor, who had vetoed many similar measures. |

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed SB 334 into law, and gun-rights groups wasted no time dragging the state into federal court.
The National Rifle Association, Firearms Policy Coalition, and Second Amendment Foundation filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, challenging the state’s new ban on so-called “machine gun convertible pistols.” The complaint argues the law is not really about machine guns at all. It is a ban on nearly every Glock and Glock-style handgun on the market. |

The Second Amendment landscape has entered a highly volatile new phase in the Old Line State. On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Governor Wes Moore signed SB 334 (the “Stop DIY Machine Guns Act”) into law, making Maryland the second state in the country – following California – to pass legislation holding firearms manufacturers legally liable for standard design elements.
The response from the gun rights community was instantaneous. Within hours of the governor’s signature, the National Rifle Association (NRA), the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), and the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) filed a joint federal lawsuit, National Rifle Association of America v. Moore, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. |

A Minnesota gun control measure was struck down Tuesday after the state’s Court of Appeals ruled that the implementation of a 2024 ban on “binary triggers” violated procedural rules within the state constitution.
The restriction had originally been added to an omnibus spending bill by Democratic lawmakers, a move that the court found breached the state’s legislative requirements. Binary triggers allow a firearm to fire one round when the trigger is pulled and a second round when it is released, increasing the potential rate of fire. |
