The Hidden Truth About Gun Control

I’ve debated gun-control lawyers. They said guns aren’t the answer for personal safety. I’ve come to a single conclusion when I look at the people who want us disarmed. Their actions speak so loud that I can barely hear their words. Some of the strongest and most consistent practitioners of armed defense are the people who espouse gun-control for the rest of us.

That is the hidden truth in the gun-control debate.

The praise just keeps pouring in for Daniel Penny, the 24-year-old white ex-Marine charged with second-degree manslaughter for choking to death a 30-year-old black mentally ill homeless man named Jordan Neely on a New York City subway.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida called Penny a Good Samaritan and urged his Twitter followers to contribute to his legal defense fund, saying “We must defeat the Soros-Funded DAs, stop the Left’s pro-criminal agenda, and take back the streets for law abiding citizens.”

Republican lawmakers push for national concealed carry and expanded "stand your ground laws." Based on what is known about how the easy access to guns and the encouragement to use them irresponsibly directly correlates to an increase in gun violence (including suicides and mass murders), the American right wing is trying to create a Hobbesian state of nature where violence and fear of death is everywhere and the rule of law is increasingly meaningless.

When Delaware lawmakers finally bucked the gun lobby nearly a year ago by banning the sale and possession of AR-15 rifles and other assault-style weapons, they allowed firearms owners to keep any weapons they already had.

But there’s a caveat — and it involves showing up at a state police facility with the weapons, and providing a thumbprint to the cops.

That’s because anyone who has an assault weapon must be able to prove they obtained it legitimately before June 30, 2022. Violations of the ban are a felony.

A federal appeals court has temporarily blocked the Biden administration from fully enforcing new regulations on pistols with stabilizing braces, gun accessories that President Biden has called "especially dangerous" after they were used in several mass shootings.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday enjoined the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from enforcing its new rule against gun owners and Second Amendment groups who filed a lawsuit challenging the regulation.

One year after the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Vermont lawmakers looked back on firearm-related bills passed in the 2023 session that they believe will make Vermont a safer state.

One of those will implement a mandatory 72-hour waiting period from the time you purchase a gun to when it enters your possession.

The Austin Police Department (APD) reports officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting at around 9 p.m. The caller, who was also the shooter, claimed he had shot a man who was dating the mother of his child after the man had attacked him.

Contreras' lawyers told jurors the threat wasn't completely gone when Koslowski and "Grace's posse" congregated in the parking lot after the exchange inside Contreras' apartment. They suggested the group may have been preparing for another attack, this time armed with the shotgun the victim took from Contreras.

She said the defendant was worried about his girlfriend, who was missing from the apartment after the initial chaos.

"He was protecting his home," Jakuback said. "They weren't retreating, they were regrouping. So as jurors, you'll have to decide how is one to know that that threat was gone."

A Franklin County jury has decided it was not murder when a Columbus woman drove her vehicle into another woman holding a gun, fatally crushing her against the wall of a fast-food restaurants building.

Bria K. Henslee, 23, of the Hilltop neighborhood, was on trial in Franklin County Common Pleas Court for two counts of murder in connection with the death of 25-year-old Makaela Ellis on April 9, 2021.

Henslee's defense team argued during the trial that Henslee was defending herself after Ellis pointed a gun at her following a fender-bender crash.

Philadelphia police believe a woman who shot a crowbar-wielding man during a road rage incident in University City was acting in self-defense.

The incident began just before 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at 30th and Chestnut streets.

"This was a road rage incident. This 22-year-old was operating a Chevy in the area of 30th and Chestnut and got into a road rage incident with a 27-year-old female who was driving her vehicle also at 30th and Chestnut," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

After the Supreme Court ruled nearly a year ago that making it unduly burdensome to acquire a permit to carry a firearm violates the Second Amendment rights of Americans, New Jersey and New York tried a new approach.

The two states attempted to disqualify Americans with permits from carrying a gun at a broad assortment of places — so broad that, as Reason magazine notes, “effectively prohibits the carrying of that handgun virtually everywhere.”

Fortunately, a federal judge struck down the attempt at circumventing the rights to self-defense and to bear arms in mid-May.

Comparing rifle cartridges is not always as straightforward as it might seem. Just because one cartridge shoots faster, flatter, and hits harder, does not always mean it’s the best option for you. Cost, application, and rifles available, should also always play a part in any cartridge decision. The 223 Remington has long been the most popular 0.22-caliber centerfire rifle cartridge, but a newer and faster option called the 224 Valkyrie has been around for a while and is turning heads. When it comes to the 224 Valkyrie vs 223 Remington, which one is better for you?

About the Second Amendment: I have questions.

I cannot wrap my lizard-sized brain around the notion that the reason for people to keep and own guns is to protect against tyranny.

Spare me the historical discourses about the establishment of the Second Amendment, because I realize a bunch of a rag-tag colonists rose up against the lobsterbacks and sent the British running.

A federal judge recently denied a convicted felon’s request to have their gun possession charge thrown out on constitutional grounds. This ruling should be viewed as disappointing.

Judge Holly A. Brady’s ruling that felons do not have gun rights is a setback for those who believe in the importance of the right to keep and bear arms, even for individuals who have made mistakes in the past.

It is true that there are historical laws that exclude felons from possessing firearms, but that does not necessarily mean that such laws are consistent with the Second Amendment.

State lawmakers are considering a bill its Republican sponsors say will protect Ohio gun owners from federal laws and policies that they think go too far. The bill would declare Ohio a “Second Amendment sanctuary state” to encourage police not to enforce federal gun control measures.

House Bill 51 would prohibit taxes or fees from being imposed on firearms, but not other goods. And it would block any federal requirement to track ownership of firearms and firearm-related products.

The California attorney general’s office will review the decision not to charge a security guard in the fatal shooting of a suspected shoplifter last month at a Walgreens store in downtown San Francisco, it said Tuesday.

The review comes after the San Francisco district attorney’s office said last week that security guard Michael Anthony would not face criminal charges because he acted in self-defense when he shot Banko Brown on April 27.

Brown’s family attorney John Burris, who previously described the guard’s actions as “way beyond what was reasonable and necessary,” sent a letter to the attorney general’s office last week requesting the investigation.

Nearly six-in-ten U.S. adults said they support laws so-called stand-your-ground laws that “allow people who are in a public place and believe that their life or safety is in danger to kill or injure the person who they think is threatening them,”—up three percent since it last polled the question. More than 80 percent of Republicans and 57 percent of Independents said they agreed with the laws, while only 40 percent of Democrats said the same.

At the same time, the poll identified a broader trend of the public turning against the need to defend gun rights in favor of reducing gun violence. It found 60 percent of Americans now think controlling gun violence is more important, while just 38 percent say the opposite.

Mr. Morant’s actions as described by Mr. Williams were neither safe nor responsible, and were possibly illegal. While Mr. Morant might have been legally eligible to carry a firearm, flashing or waving a firearm in public is not carrying and is often illegal. Mr. Morant’s unsafe and irresponsible actions involving firearms and similar actions by a very small percentage of gun possessors (I can’t call them firearm owners) give all firearm owners a bad image. For this reason, unsafe and irresponsible gun possessors will have little support from responsible firearm owners.

Last week, Democrats on the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee advanced several extreme gun control initiatives, despite Maine’s reputation as the safest state in the country. Both the House and the Senate will vote on these proposals in the coming weeks.

The NRA and Gun Owners of Maine are calling on all members to join fellow gun-rights supporters at the Maine State House on Tuesday, May 30th, at 9:00 A.M. to talk to lawmakers about the importance of protecting Maine’s heritage of gun ownership.

One of the things we know is that in areas in the United States where all other things are equal, where there are fewer guns and stronger laws, there’s a lot less violent death. We can say that, overall, stronger laws are really effective at reducing violent death. To say which law is the most important, I would like to see numerous things. I’d really like to see licensing of gun owners and registration of handguns—for many reasons, I think that’d be really useful. I would love to see what we have in motor vehicles, which is that we have a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration where people wake up every day and their job is to try to figure out how to reduce motor vehicle deaths and injuries, ...

There are over twenty million issued carry permits now in the United States, and bear in mind that this is in a nation that now has over half of the states honoring Constitutional Carry, thus requiring no permit at all to carry concealed. This is a good thing. On any given day, there are millions of American citizens carrying guns, and the majority of these guns are being carried concealed.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes last week joined a multi-state coalition supporting the prohibition of gun sales to those under 21.

The amicus brief filed under 21 attorneys general with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit claims the Second Amendment lets governments implement varied regulations, such as age restrictions, to protect the public, Mayes said in a press release.

“Protecting our communities from gun violence requires multiple solutions, including laws already on the books,” Mayes, a Democrat, said in the release.

That a person's home is his or her "castle" is one of the most basic tenets of our jurisprudence. However, for Richard Burns …, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for openly carrying and loading his firearm in the yard of his own home, the "castle" our law entitled him to protect was relegated to a defenseless dungeon. We conclude that the trial court erred in denying his motion for immunity from prosecution pursuant to Florida's Stand Your Ground law. We therefore grant his petition for writ of prohibition because he is legally entitled to immunity from prosecution on the aggravated assault charge….

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of the people to keep and bear...arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country... — James Madison, I Annals of Congress 434, June 8, 1789.
