The good news is that most of us are headed back to work. Unfortunately, we’ve seen too many new things during quarantine to be sure about our new “normal”.

I’m worried that our new normal is about accepting political domination.

Gun control advocates are gearing up to make Texas their top political battleground in November.

Everytown for Gun Safety announced in February that it would spend at least $8 million this election cycle in the state, mainly focusing on U.S. House and state House races. On Monday, the Michael Bloomberg-backed group announced the first round of that spending — a $250,000 digital ad campaign targeting Republicans in five key congressional races. And on Thursday, the group is naming three staffers to help with its Texas campaign, including two veteran Democratic operatives.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, some here in Illinois say that a gun violence pandemic has been raging for decades. On Thursday, May 7, the Illinois Moms Demand Action group hosted a Virtual Advocacy Day to support gun safety legislation.

“Now is the time to come together. Be a responsible Democrat, Republican, everyone. We must never stop fighting," said former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in one afternoon rally.

Amidst a pandemic that has taken 70,000 lives and devastated the economy, Americans could be forgiven for failing to notice that just two weeks ago, our northern neighbor suffered its deadliest-ever mass shooting. A gunman rampaged through rural Nova Scotia, killing 22 people over a 14-hour period.

On Thursday, a federal court issued an injunction against bans by Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker on the operation of gun stores as part of COVID-19 responses.

The four-page order by U.S. District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock, an appointment by President Ronald Reagan, came after hearings earlier this week on legal action brought by a host of retailers and pro-gun groups. While Woodlock ordered that firearms dealers still need to take proper steps to ensure social distancing and safety measures, he said that stores could re-open at noon on Saturday.

The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives us the right to own guns. But I do not believe it gives individuals the right to own assault-style weapons. As Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently said, “The weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest period of time.” Why would any rational, law-abiding citizen need such a weapon? I can’t imagine.

Today, Governor Larry Hogan issued a veto on Senate Bill 208 and House Bill 4. Gov. Hogan knows that restricting law-abiding citizens will do nothing to stop criminals. In his statement on the veto, he reaffirmed his priority to “hold violent criminals accountable” for their actions.

A federal judge on Thursday ordered Massachusetts authorities to allow gun shops to reopen after the governor deemed them non-essential businesses that needed to close to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock in Boston ruled that the restrictions ordered by Republican Governor Charlie Baker in response to the pandemic imposed an "improper burden" on the constitutional rights of citizens seeking to possess firearms.

Massachusetts gun store owners could reopen as soon as Saturday thanks to a federal order that slammed Gov. Charlie Baker’s decision to close the stores during the COVID-19 shutdown, calling the move an “improper burden,” on the Second Amendment.

U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock said Baker failed to give a good reason for closing the stores.

“There’s no justification here,” said Woodlock during a virtual hearing on the case Thursday.

A federal judge today issued a preliminary injunction that bars Gov. Baker from continuing to shut gun shops because, after all, come on, Charlie, Second Amendment. And that goes for you too, Maura.

US District Court Judge Douglas Woodlock did make some concessions to the current public-health emergency: Gun stores can only sell guns by appointment, and no more than four of those an hour, people inside shops will have to stay at least six feet away from each other, employees will have to wear face coverings and stores will have to provide hand-washing sinks and soap to employees - and the time to use them.

It’s tough to determine who, exactly, is buying guns and for what reasons. Anecdotal reporting suggests that many of the sales are panic purchases by first-time gun owners. Of course, it’s helped that President Donald Trump—after a lobbying blitz from gun rights groups—issued guidance that gun shops should be considered essential businesses and allowed to remain open, even as states were forcing other retailers to close their doors in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. Many state governors complied, and some even reversed previous orders to have gun stores closed, citing Trump’s guidance.

Disregarding for a moment this gross violation of the principles of federalism and the naivete of trusting anti-gun federal prosecutors and judges to differentiate between “offenders” in an era where official government bodies have declared NRA a terrorist organization, the “violent felon” language is what this new bill has done away with:

By defining “serious felony” solely based on the potential term of imprisonment, the bill would address the vagueness issue and remove any discretion or doubt about which offenses qualify.

And they emphasize they mean “any offense.”

Located just one click away — wait, don’t go just yet! — there’s a new website loaded with information on the defensive use of firearms by law-abiding U.S. citizens appropriately called the Defensive Gun Use Database.

The handiwork of the conservative Heritage Foundation, the database is described by writer Amy Swearer of the Daily Signal as “an interactive map featuring news accounts from police reports.” But this resource is much more than just a quick stop on the World Wide Web.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms....The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. — Thomas Jefferson in a letter to William S. Smith in 1787.
