Some 270 Macomb County residents seeking a first-time Certified Pistol License were put on hold for three months due to COVID-19. But starting next week they will be able to achieve their goal.

County Clerk Fred Miller will reopen the Clerk’s Office vital records offices to the public for first-time applicants who were not able to submit their information while county buildings were closed during the state Stay at Home executive order.

“It’s a big step forward, and we’re excited to do it,” Miller said.

Starting Monday, applicants can go to the Talmer Building at 120 N. Main Street in Mount Clemens under strict conditions to ensure protection against the coronavirus.

The order allows the use of non-lethal weapons against protesters in cases of self-defense, but only if a higher-ranked officer witnesses a situation where their use is required.

Officers also need to give protesters time to move away after orders are given, and if officers suspect some people many not have heard the orders, they need to repeat them again before using non-lethal weapons.

Police officers must also keep their body cameras on at all times during the protests.

As Republicans have pointed out many times since January, the right of the people to peacefully assemble and petition their government for the remedy of grievances is a fundamental Constitutional right.

It is telling that Governor Northam waited for two days of arson and rioting before declaring a state of emergency. When faced with a peaceful Second Amendment protest in January, he declared a state of emergency that started two days before the rally even began and before the first person ever arrived on Capitol Square.

Governor Northam’s reactions to both the riots and the coronavirus have been a lesson in how not to lead during a crisis.

“So in cases where you’re acting in everyone’s best interests or the people involved’s best interests, you can sort of ignore this risk of violating their rights,” Swenson said.

The authors argue that the same is true with gun control; the government can consider beforehand what gives each person the best chance to survive. Though a very few might not survive because they won’t have a weapon at hand when needed to avoid dire peril, for most it will be best not to have it available.

Even if you feel that you are completely justified in your defensive gun use, you can still face both criminal and civil penalties. You can be charged with a crime (or crimes), found innocent of all charges, and easily be out a few hundred thousand dollars for your legal expenses proving your innocence. Additionally, you can be sued by individuals (the person you shot and/or their family members). Defending each of these lawsuits will also incur legal expenses and you may even have to pay damages if you lose.

The San Diego County Gun Owners PAC has published a statement announcing that they “are not taking sides with the protests.”

Some Montanans have asked if there is a briefing sheet for how community guards would function to protect their communities from the mayhem that has been in the news. No such briefing sheet has been apparent. What is offered below is just suggestions for any person or groups contemplating community protection. Ideas to improve this are welcome.

There is growing concern that federal forces could be invoked to address the rioting, looting, and arson so much in the news. That sort of federal response would surely diminish liberty. Nevertheless, the criminal, mob conduct we've seen on the news cannot and should not be ignored.

A citizen’s initiative that would have asked Florida voters to ban assault weapons in 2022 has stumbled before the state Supreme Court, which found the question and its accompanying summary was too misleading to make it to the ballot.

The ruling is good news for the National Rifle Association and National Sports Shooting Foundation, which opposed the idea.

His father, Donell King Sr. now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and a weapons offense in the death of his son.

Those who keep guns in their homes (or their trucks) have an obligation to do so safely, particularly when there are children in the household.

They have an obligation to teach their children to respect guns and handle them safely. Certainly they have a responsibility not to leave a loaded gun in an unsecured place children can easily access.

Written into Florida laws regarding states of emergencies amid civil unrest are three paragraphs about guns.

One prohibits gun sales. Another bars stores from displaying any firearms or ammunition. And the third forbids anyone but law enforcement and military officers from the “intentional possession in a public place of a firearm.”

Meanwhile, armed protests against state health measures, such as those that shut down the Michigan Legislature last month, seem rooted in an ideology promoted by the modern NRA: that only firearms in civilian hands can safeguard the nation from government overreach. Here are five myths about the group’s mission and history — some told by critics, others told by the NRA itself.

Nashville police are investigating a claim of self-defense in Friday's fatal shooting in a gas station parking lot.

Police say that Azon Smith, 24, is claiming he fatally shot Justin Sturgis, 34, out of self-defense. The deadly shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the parking lot of an Exxon gas station in the 800 block of South Gallatin Pike.

The investigation shows that Sturgis and Smith were arguing inside the store, because Sturgis didn't like the way Smith looked at him. Police say Sturgis made verbal threats toward Smith and his girlfriend, who works at the gas station, before displaying a gun.

Advancing legislation that would allow truck drivers to travel freely between states while carrying a concealed weapon is a priority for the lawmaker who introduced it.

“Truck drivers are the backbone of our country and understand this issue more than most, as they drive alone with valuable merchandise across state lines every week,” U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-North Carolina, who introduced the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2019, told FreightWaves. “I will continue to fight to advance this bill in Congress and defend the rights of truck drivers and all law-abiding citizens.”

Chicago's 911 center received 65,000 calls in one 24-hour period over the weekend — 50,000 more than normal, Lightfoot said Monday, according to WTTW-TV.

About 10,000 of those calls were for looting alone, the mayor added to the station, noting that operators fielded over 2,000 calls in just 30 minutes at one point.

"The police department was responding as best they could," Lightfoot said, WTTW reported. "The challenge was, it was everywhere. Everywhere. The violence and looting spread like a wildfire."

Hamilton was previously convicted of murdering Donaldson.

She was granted a new trial that was appealed by the state several times.

The Dougherty County District Attorney was set to argue in the state’s highest court that she should not be immune from prosecution.

But earlier this year, she was ultimately granted immunity from prosecution.

City leaders took issue with Bukala’s statement immediately after that, saying it was “hostile.”

“We at the Lowell Police Department support the legally armed citizen and the second amendment.”

Am I going crazy?

Did I fall asleep yesterday and wake up on July 3, 1776?

We are now cancelling the careers and character of police chiefs because they actually support the Bill Of Rights?
