A teen is dead and another is injured after a shooting in White Lake Township when they and five others allegedly broke into a homeowner's detached garage Tuesday.
According to neighbors, this was the third time the garage had been burglarized. Police are now investigating the shooting. All of it raises questions about when homeowners can legally use deadly force.
Michigan's self-defense laws provide specific guidelines for when lethal force is justified, according to Jim Makowski, a defense lawyer who specializes in Michigan firearm and use of force laws. |

Lynchburg Police have recovered dozens of stolen vehicles this year.
They said thieves often target unlocked cars, and in many cases, find firearms inside.
That's why police said you need to take extra precautions so those guns don't end up in the wrong hands.
Most commonly, when cars are being broken into, the thieves are specifically looking for guns.
Ed.: Then stop forcing people to leave their gun in the car; eliminate gun-free zones. |

When it comes to firearms legislation, most Americans believe protecting their rights to own guns is of paramount importance, according to 2024 Pew Research data. They practiced that right by buying 16.1 million guns last year, according to SafeHome.
What was Georgia's share of that and where are the most guns? Here's what we know from SafeHome's study:
How many guns have been sold in Georgia? Georgia saw about 420,946 guns sold in 2024 with five sold per 100 residents age 21 or older, according to SafeHome's data. This represents a 0.6% increase in sales from 2023 and ranked the Peach State as No. 16 in most gun sales. |

A report by the FBI’s Ballistic Research Facility that was recently made public has placed the Sig Sauer M18/P320 series of striker-fired semi-auto pistols back into the spotlight. The report was based on the BRF’s tests of a Sig Sauer M18 that had been issued to a motor officer with the Michigan State Police. That pistol experienced an “uncommanded discharge” in July 2024, according to the document. The incident occurred while the gun was holstered, and in front of multiple witnesses. It joins a substantial list of similar reports, many of which have resulted in lawsuits. |

A 2012 study suggested that in Everglades National Park, pythons were responsible for a decline of 85% to 100% of the population of medium-sized animals such as raccoons and rabbits.
To help control this, every year the state encourages hunters to thin the Burmese snake population with a competition and prizes. But the snakes must be killed humanely, and guns are prohibited. So are using dogs, drones, traps and off-road vehicles, or killing snakes that are not Burmese pythons. |

Gov. Josh Stein vetoed a trio of bills Wednesday, rejecting legislation that would allow private school employees to carry guns, bar local governments from further regulating pet shops and protect nonprofits’ member and donor information.
Stein, a Democrat, also signed a bundle of nine bills into law.
His vetoes go back to the Republican-controlled legislature, where lawmakers can attempt to override them. Any override votes are likely to easily pass in the Senate if all members are present; but in the House, Republicans are one vote short of a party-line supermajority. |

Several state lawmakers from the Capital Region said they will seek to tighten access to flare guns in the wake of a violent Fourth of July weekend in Albany that involved an historic home in the city's Center Square neighborhood going up in flames.
State Sen. Patricia Fahy and Assembly members John T. McDonald III and Gabriella Romero said Wednesday that forthcoming bills would create new criminal offenses for selling flare guns to people under 21, and would make the use of flare guns as weapons illegal. |

Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced the court-approved settlement of a civil lawsuit against licensed firearms retailer FSS Armory, Inc. of Pine Brook, whose gun product storage practices, featured on its website, culminated in a 2023 burglary in which criminals took 18 unsecured guns.
To date, only half of the stolen guns have been recovered, and each of those was located by law enforcement at a crime scene or in the hands of criminals—including on the scene of subsequent crimes that resulted in injury to a responding police officer, according to Platkin.

The stone wall wasn’t particularly tall, and since it had withstood the past 150 or so years, it certainly wasn’t weak. But after 15 miles in the grouse woods, my legs were jelly. Bob has a decade on me, and his legs were kinda spongy, too.
“Watch the ground when you get over the wall,” I said. “The mud is slick.”
No sooner did I say this, I heard a thud. Bob had crashed to the ground. Fortunately, he had opened the barrels on his over/under, removed the shells, and, as he was falling, figured out how to land without damaging his shotgun. His back? He’d need a chiropractor to patch that up. |

In the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, we take pride in our heritage of self-reliance and respect for constitutional freedoms. From farmers and ranchers to small business owners and families who have called this region home for generations, the right to keep and bear arms is more than an abstract principle — it is a cornerstone of our way of life.
That is why the Fresno County Board of Supervisors recently adopted a Resolution in Support of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. While some may dismiss this as a symbolic act, I believe this resolution sends an essential message to Sacramento: That here in the Central Valley and across Fresno County, we stand firm in defending the rights of law-abiding citizens. |

This success marks the beginning of a concerted effort by the three organizations to replicate the refund resolution across the entire Garden State. |

At the heart of California’s defense was a claim that the Second Amendment doesn’t actually guarantee the right to buy multiple guns – just to own one. According to the court, that logic doesn’t hold water. “California is wrong,” Judge Forrest wrote bluntly. “The Second Amendment protects the right to possess multiple firearms.”
This opinion aligns with the view long held by pro-2A attorneys and gun rights advocates. As reported by Washington Gun Law’s William Kirk, the state essentially argued that as long as a person owns one firearm, they’ve met their Second Amendment quota. Kirk ridiculed the logic, asking rhetorically, “Would we ever allow the First Amendment to be limited to one protest a month?” |

Two men convicted of illegally making AR-15 rifles for commercial sale lost their appeal bid Wednesday after failing to convince a federal appeals court their Second Amendment rights were violated by laws prohibiting their conduct.
Federal law prohibiting unlicensed commercial gun manufacturing doesn’t violate the right to keep and bear arms or meaningfully constrain would-be purchasers from obtaining them, according to the opinion issued by the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
The panel concludes that “the text of the Second Amendment does not cover the conduct regulated by” the federal statute at issue, Judge Danielle J. Forrest ... |

South Dakota as of July 1 allows students to carry concealed weapons on campus, “a good way, once again, for South Dakota to demonstrate we’re the free state in the nation,” Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden said in a Newsmax interview.
“We’ve done more to defend our Second Amendment rights, I think, than any other state,” Rhoden, who signed bills into law in March that allow concealed pistols in bars and on public college campuses, among other gun rights-related changes, told Newsmax TV’s “Carl Higbie: FRONTLINE.”
Senate Bill 100 makes South Dakota the 12th state to allow concealed carry on college campuses. |

Gov. Josh Stein vetoed legislation on Wednesday that would have given private schools the option to allow teachers or school volunteers to carry concealed handguns on campus. House Bill 193 would have permitted employees or volunteers at private schools to carry firearms or stun guns on school grounds if they received written permission from the school’s board of trustees or administrative director, had a concealed handgun permit, and completed an approved training course.
