Moviegoers of 1950 enjoyed a motion picture with a unique plot twist. Rather than a tale of the trials and tribulations of a hero, we were treated to the travels and transfers of a gun. A big-budget Western starring Jimmy Stewart leading a large cast of well-known actors, “Winchester ’73” treated the gun as though it were a character. Its behavior (accuracy) established in the opening scene, succeeding scenes showed the gun used and misused, bought and sold, as it moved from owner to owner. An interesting story and well told, the film was fictional—the gun was not.

We’ve reported before about the pandemic gun surge, in which Americans bought more than 40 million guns in 2020 and 2021, and how it hints at growing concerns about crime and violence, even as many are calling for stricter gun control legislation. A new survey out this week, conducted by the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, helps us fill in the bigger picture around those two seemingly conflicting trends.

Sharps was one of the most iconic makers of 19th-century American firearms. The company started out making guns around 1849 and stayed in business until the late 1870s. The heyday for their carbines was during the Civil War from 1861-1865. The U.S. Army bought almost 400,000 American carbines during that war, of twenty different brands. The most procured was the seven-shot repeating Spencer carbine, at over 95,000 guns.

Not content with their ongoing efforts to trample the Second Amendment-protected liberties of America’s law-abiding gun owners, anti-gun advocates have set their sights on the First Amendment rights of lawful gun manufacturers. To achieve this goal, gun-control groups have been pushing to have the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulate the way gun companies advertise their products. In a petition filed earlier this year, these groups even claimed gunmakers suggesting that firearms make their owners safer is false advertising.

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have an item that may look familiar to you if you are a movie person or…a shark person. This is a Greener Martini Harpoon Gun. The Greener Martini Harpoon Gun is famously seen in the fantastic 1975 film Jaws when the character Quint shoots barrels into the killer shark that has been tormenting the tv screen up until then. I am hay to reveal to you that it is not just arop. The Greener Martini Harpoon Gun is a real thing. Greener produced many Martini action firearms from shotguns to harpoon guns.
