A recent wave of court decisions around the country have recognized the constitutional right of citizens to possess arms such as daggers, nunchucks and Tasers for self-defense, and now a pair of San Diego military veterans are challenging California’s ban on another weapon: the baton. Striking weapons such as billy clubs, blackjacks, leaded canes and saps — described in a 1923 San Diego Union story as “weapons of the holdup man or thug” — have been outlawed in some form or other in the state since at least 1917.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley joined congressional Democratic leaders in the nation’s capital Monday to call for expanding federal background checks for most firearms purchases. With House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer by her side, Whaley urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to bring a bill to the Senate floor that already has passed the House that would require background checks for sales and transfers at gun shows, online transactions and other private sales.

An Open Letter to Legislators Regarding Red Flag Laws

In the politically-charged aftermath of the recent mass-murders, legislators at all levels have expressed interest in “red flag” bills in an apparent effort to “do something.” Shockingly this group includes several lawmakers that previously appeared to understand that the Second Amendment protected every individual's God-given inalienable right to self-defense against government infringement. Below is my effort to remind them that they are negotiating with forces that do not share the same values as our Founding Fathers and instead of negotiating in good faith for the common good they are using lies, tortured statistics, and strawman arguments to pave a road towards disarmament.

Second Amendment Foundation: Background Checks Policy Shouldn't be Decided on Just Odessa

Anti-gun-rights extremists are moving swiftly to exploit the tragic shooting in Texas to bolster their demand for so-called universal background checks, which gun owners believe is actually an insidious national gun registration scheme.

The Odessa murderer failed a 2014 background check, but he subsequently acquired a firearm via a private transaction. This is an anomaly, since nearly every other mass shooter in recent memory legally purchased their firearms and passed background checks in the process. Two murdered their parents and took their legally purchased guns.

If you were a time traveler from all the way back in 2018, there's a good chance the noise emanating from Austin this week would have made your head spin. Following a pair of mass murders in El Paso and the Permian Basin, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick each sounded a lot like they actually intended to do something about the violence.

“Do something, Mr. McConnell,” The Washington Post wrings its hands and wails in a virtue-bleating Wednesday editorial. “When the Senate returns from its Labor Day recess, it must act on guns.” Something must be done! We’ve heard that before. And as usual, that “something” involves curtailing the rights of those who already follow the rules and does nothing to curtail the predatory actions of those who never will.

Guns “empower” women, and this empowerment also makes female gun owners more politically active, according to a new study. “Intersectionality in Action: Gun Ownership and Women’s Political Participation,” was published July 2019 in Social Science Quarterly. Its lead author is Alexandra Middlewood, who holds a doctorate in political science and is an assistant professor of political science at Wichita State University.

The mayors of Parkland and Miami flew to Washington Monday to participate in a bipartisan U.S. Conference of Mayors delegation lobbying for bills in the House and Senate for universal background checks on gun purchases. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and Parkland Mayor Christine Hunschofsky flew to Washington early Monday ahead of a 2 p.m. meeting at the White House. The delegation — which Suarez said is comprised of nine mayors — is meeting with President Donald Trump’s counselor, Kellyanne Conway, the director of his Domestic Policy Council, Joe Grogan, and perhaps others, according to an itinerary.

At least 34 people were shot — six of them fatally — over the weekend in gun violence across Chicago, including a 17-year-old girl who was killed Sunday in Back of the Yards on the South Side. She was walking about 9:30 p.m. in the 900 block of West 52nd Street, when a man emerged from an alley and the two of them got into “a verbal altercation,” Chicago police said. The man then pulled out a handgun and shot her three times in the head and multiple times in the upper body.

Meijer has joined a growing number of large U.S. retailers asking customers to not openly carry guns in their stores.

The Midwest retailer announced the request Monday, Sept. 9 on Twitter, stating the open display of guns can make employees and customers feel in danger.

“The safety of our customers and team members is our top priority, so we respectfully request that our customers do not open carry firearms at Meijer,” the company stated in the Tweet. “We’ve made this decision because open carry can create an environment that makes our customers and team members feel unsafe.”

It was not immediately clear what, if any, changes Meijer is making to sales of ammunition and firearms.

Handing Guns to Others: An Essential Safety Skill

A task that happens quite frequently at the range is the handing of a loaded firearm from one person to another. This task is rarely discussed in the community and is rather taken for granted. This process can prove dangerous, and there have been quite a few negligent discharges involved in such. When handing a loaded gun to another person, there are inherent safety risks, and the process must be done correctly to ensure safety. If you are teaching a new shooter at the range, this will certainly be a consideration, or even if you are shooting with other shooting buddies. How do we safely transmit the firearm to another person?

History of 9x21mm IMI Ammo

Introduced in 1980, the 9x21mm IMI was a creation between the Franco Benvenuti agency of Italy and Israel Military Industries (IMI). Many countries, including Italy and most of the European Union, have banned the use of all military ammunition, such as the 9mm Parabellum. In order to circumvent gun control measures, the collaborative effort to create a substitute ammunition was seen as a good resolution and would allow civilians to own and use a powerful cartridge without fear of repercussions.

NASCAR is waving a caution flag on guns. In fact, it looks like it’s a pit stop when it comes to firearms advertising. The sport borne of bootleggers and popularized by drivers running just on the inside edge of being out of control is now cautioning team owners that the ads on their cars can no longer feature modern sporting rifles or sniper rifles. Internet firearms retail site K-Var was informed by the National Event Publications, which also sells advertising space for NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, NASCAR, PGA, NHRA, & USA Today Lifestyle, their advertising was no longer welcome.

It was the second burglary at the business since July.

In case you didn’t notice it on social media, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has gotten into a bit of a spat with Texas Senator Ted Cruz. The subject is guns and gang violence, something that Ms. Lightfoot is finding to be a largely intractable problem in the Windy City, though some modest decreases in murders have been recorded in the past few months. Rather than sticking to Twitter to hash this out, the mayor landed herself an op-ed slot in the WaPo this week to stake out her case against Cruz.
