A former Tennessee police officer could face up to 20 years in prison after reaching a plea deal Wednesday in which he reportedly admitted to raping three women in his custody and using a stun gun to hold a fourth against her will.

Desmond Logan, 33, pleaded guilty to two counts of deprivation of rights for a case surrounding a 2018 rape, a separate incident at the University of Tennessee at Chatanooga involving a Taser, and two additional rapes from 2015 and 2016...

The fastest way to trend on Twitter, and not in a good way, is to say that the right to bear arms is a God-given right.

Texas state Rep. Matt Schaefer established this beyond a doubt in a Twitter thread in the aftermath of the West Texas shooting spree. He said that he wouldn’t use “the evil acts of a handful of people to diminish the God-given rights of my fellow Texans.”

Progressives were aghast, and when actress Alyssa Milano objected, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz jumped in to support Schaefer’s argument (in less bombastic terms).

The threat of school shootings has been a fact of life for Julie Johnson her entire teaching career.

"When Columbine happened was my first year teaching . . . after class I was just watching this all unfold," Johnson said, referring to the infamous 1999 high school shooting in Columbine, Colorado. "The horror struck me — 'what would I do?' "

Ads posted on Facebook from a committee working to reelect President Donald Trump claim that Democrats are calling for the Second Amendment to be repealed. To support the claim, the Trump campaign pointed to statements by a few state lawmakers and one candidate for U.S. Senate.

The ads, however, could lead some viewers to believe this is a position of Democrats in Congress or those running for president. It’s not.

The types of handguns carried by law enforcement do not vary as much as those carried by civilians for self-defense. This is typically due to organizations choosing a well-performing cartridge — often 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP — coupled with the quantity of ammunition that the magazines can accept.

In response to Republican Dan Crenshaw's (TX) warning that background check legislation may have unintended consequences, including disallowing lending guns to friends for self-protection, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) accused her fellow freshman member of Congress of lending guns to people who have "likely abused their spouse or have a violent criminal record." The accusation sparked a strong response from Crenshaw, which prompted the pro-gun control Democrat to double down on her comment.

DC: Want an assault weapons ban that works? Focus on ballistics.

Bottom line: Many semiautomatic firearms are exceptionally lethal whether they’re short- or long-barreled, have handgrips or extended magazines. What can be done? Following the examples set by Britain and, most recently, New Zealand, we could ban them outright. Or we could create a scale of lethality, assigning scores for penetration ability and wounding effect along with ammunition capacity, rate of fire and accuracy at range. Guns that wind up at the dangerous extreme could be prohibited, while others would be subject to a range of controls.

Can we adjust the statistics so fewer people get shot?

But wait. Some say this tragedy can be prevented by reducing the percentage of armed public.

Say it’s cut in half, from 50,000 to 25,000. This yields 250 potentially violent gunowners, which if 1 percent pull the trigger means 2.5 victims.

This represents an improvement. Unless – as some argue – the presence of fewer guns emboldens the 250 potentially violent citizens with guns, so that they kill more often.

This is an exceptionally simplistic sketch of the issue; I know you can improve on it.

The National Rifle Association gave a historic contribution to Virginia’s statewide elections this week, donating just over $200,000 to House of Delegates Majority Leader Todd Gilbert.

The donation is far less than the $2.5 million given by gun control advocates. But both sums show how the issue could be decisive in the November elections for the General Assembly.

“They may outspend the NRA, but they will never outwork us,” said NRA spokesperson Catherine Mortensen.

Following a lengthy Twitter confrontation over how best to respond to the scourge of mass shootings, Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) and actress Alyssa Milano have agreed to meet in person to debate the issue.

Milano on Sunday challenged her Twitter followers to produce a Biblical passage that would support a God-given right to gun ownership. Cruz responded with a ten-tweet thread detailing how the right to self-defense, if not gun ownership specifically, is in fact enshrined in the Bible.

When are teachers permitted to shoot students?

That question may seem absurd to parents sending kids back to school. But America suffers from an expanding gun crisis. Shootings have become routine.

And in Utah, with local NRA proxies promoting more armed teachers and the Legislature having made our “stand your ground” law more permissive, it’s not far-fetched to imagine situations where an armed Utah teacher might feel justified shooting an “aggressive” student in her classroom.

In a new video that blasts Hollywood for its bias against guns and its purposeful misleading of the public on the issue, John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center uses clips from various TV shows to show exactly how deep the bias is and how the animus toward guns is redolent within Hollywood.

Lott begins, "Hollywood hates guns. Well, They like them in shoot-em-up movies. But as soon as it comes to a good civilian using a gun for self-defense, Hollywood turns anti-gun. Hollywood constantly portrays people who hate guns."

Gun owners have a duty to stop this madness

We need more law-abiding responsible gun owners owning the Second Amendment and practicing it responsibly. We need to prevent monsters from having guns.

Start with age 21 to buy any gun.

It is currently legal for an 18-year-old boy to go to a store and buy an AR-15 if there is nothing negative in his background check.

The NICS system needs to be upgraded, improved and maintained with current data and sometimes a four-day delay becomes the standard wait.

If your life is in immediate danger and you need a gun today — borrow one from a law-abiding gun owner or stay in their dwelling. Go to a safe public place. Go stay in the lobby of a police station.

Detectives investigating a fatal shooting in Lakeland believe the person killed was an intruder who was shot in self defense, the city’s police department said in a statement Friday.

Officers responded to a house on Jewel Avenue near West Memorial Boulevard Thursday afternoon following reports of gunshots after a home invasion. Both suspects — Anastasia Crumb-Guy and Tysheana Marshall — were wounded, and were taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, where Crumb-Guy was later pronounced dead.

Jury selection is set to begin Friday for the white former Dallas police officer who shot and killed her unarmed black neighbor in his apartment last year. Amber Guyger said she entered the apartment by mistake and thought 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean was a burglar.

Guyger, a four-year police veteran who was fired last year, was originally charged with manslaughter after the Sept. 6, 2018, slaying of Jean, a Dallas accountant and native of St. Lucia. In November, a grand jury handed up an indictment for murder.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Some of the worst abuses of government force in recent years were precipitated by technical and victimless gun-law violations. For example, the BATF claimed that the Branch Davidians possessed machine guns without paying the required federal tax and filling in the proper registration forms. So a tax case worth less than $10,000 led to a 76-man helicopter, machine gun, and grenade assault on a home in which 2/3 of the occupants were women and children. — Dave Kopel and Dr. Michael S.
