The right to bear arms shall not be infringed

Kenneth Oke, in his letter in the Saturday, Aug. 24 Alpena News, claims “Citizens should not own weapons of war.” He states that citizen-owned weapons should be limited to one shot at a time and registered.

Using that inference, he should also agree that the First Amendment would not allow typewriters, modern printing presses, computers and printers, smart phones, radio, television, or the internet. You cannot maintain that advances in technology can be allowed for one freedom but not allowed for others.

As far as allowing weapons of war, Oke should also agree that we should not be allowed to possess lever-action rifles or bolt-action rifles, that are commonly used for hunting, as they were all at one time military arms.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick ‘willing to take an arrow’ in bucking NRA on background checks

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said Friday he is “willing to take an arrow” as he pushed back on the National Rifle Association and joined calls for strengthened background checks in the state in the wake of a number of mass shootings.

Submitter's note:

The problem with universal background checks is that they are not enforceable without registration of all guns, and the government keeping records of who owns what. This is just the foot in the door. The gun control crowd will not stop at universal back ground checks. If they succeed with that, they will go on to demand gun registration. History has shown that gun registration leads to confiscation. Hitler's Germany, Laos, Venezuela, Armenia, and at least a dozen more countries.

If it’s costly, impractical, and unconstitutional, Kamala Harris is fully behind it. To be fair, this describes almost all of her competitors in the Democratic presidential primaries. On forced confiscation of firearms, Harris is trying to carve out her own niche, apparently

The American Old West: How Hollywood Made It “Wild” to Make Money & Advance Gun Control

Hollywood has a clever way of distorting our perspective on history, and a great example of this is Western film – a movie genre we've all come to love. Cattle rustlers, guns blazing, outlaws running loose, and vigilantes dishing out vengeance indiscriminately. These scenes have become more synonymous with the American Frontier than Winchester and their "Cartridge That Won the West." But these fictional tales have produced more than entertainment for over a century; they've also contributed to an ongoing, subtle push for gun control, all while making Hollywood millions.

People are expressing outrage on social media after a craft store tweeted that it allows customers to carry firearms. In a Dept. 7 tweet, JOANN Fabric & Craft said, "Hi! JOANN prefers that guns are not brought into our stores, to help foster a comfortable shopping environment. However, if a customer lawfully brings a gun in, and is not disrupting other customers or is not perceived as a threat, then we generally will allow it. -Rachel."

We don’t have more automobiles than people in the United States of America. We don’t have more televisions than people. We don’t have more radios than people. We don’t have more cell phones than people.

What we do have is more guns than people.

A recent report published by the Small Arms Survey in Geneva, Switzerland, found that there are more than 393 million firearms owned by civilians in this country. We have a population of 326 million. That means there are 120.5 firearms for every 100 American citizens, according to the Washington Post. It’s a fact.

ONE WISHES THE media would stop using absurdly lazy phrases like “mandatory gun buybacks.” Unless the politician they’re talking about is in the business of selling firearms, it’s impossible for him to “buy back” anything. No government official — not Joe Biden, not Beto O’Rourke, not any of the candidates who now support “buyback” programs — has ever sold firearms.

The fastest way to trend on Twitter, and not in a good way, is to say that the right to bear arms is a God-given right. Texas state Rep. He said that he wouldn’t use “the evil acts of a handful of people to diminish the God-given rights of my fellow Texans.”

During an interview with MSNBC's Chris Hayes, Hogg blamed the National Rifle Association and pro-Second Amendment politicians for mass shootings. Hogg believes it's pro-gun advocates' fault for saying there's a problem with mental health in our nation.

Time was, CEOs of mighty enterprises shied away from politics, especially hot-button social and cultural issues. They focused instead on the bottom line. They maximized shareholder value by delivering goods and services to customers. Some businessmen still operate by this principle. In doing so they provide not only for their employees and CEOs and board members but also for the institutions — pensions, individual retirement plans, index funds, hospitals, philanthropies — that have invested in their companies.

Long frustrated by their inability to get much action in Washington, D.C., Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America branched out to the states in an effort to score. A win, that is. Unfortunately for the Demanding Moms, they will remain frustrated in Oklahoma as they have failed to gather enough signatures to put Oklahoma’s new Constitutional Carry law up for a vote. They needed 60,000 John or Jane Hancocks. But the Moms, led by a Democrat Oklahoma State Rep. named Jason Lowe (couldn’t they find an actual mom to lead them?), failed miserably.

This can be a great time of the year to enjoy the outdoors. Some waterfowl (Michigan) and dove hunting (Indiana) has already begun. Michigan’s early goose and teal season opened Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 16.

Nebraska’s 2019 dove season opened this week. On my first hunt, I did not see many birds and I was a bit worried. I have heard from other hunters and they have noted the same thing. A couple of ranchers I know have observed that there seems to be fewer doves in the Sandhills. They both theorize that the last cool spell we had, with overnight temperatures in the 60s, may have triggered their southern migration.

U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Oregon) has signed onto a legal brief asking the Supreme Court not to hold the gun-maker Remington Arms financially responsible for the Sandy Hook massacre. Remington manufactured the Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle used to kill 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012. Families of the victims sued Remington for wrongful death in 2015, arguing that the gun-maker violated state laws by advertising its product to young men in violent video games.

West Virginia's Attorney General Patrick Morrisey affirmed his state’s concealed-carry reciprocity with several states in an annual practice. “Since 2013, our office has vigorously worked to uphold the rule of law and preserve our citizens’ constitutional right to carry a firearm,” Attorney General Morrisey told America’s 1st Freedom via email. “West Virginians travel the country every day, and by protecting their concealed-carry rights, we ensure their continued freedom to do both—travel and still exercise their Second Amendment rights.”
