First story on page.

Students in 21 Houston-area school districts can receive rewards of $50 to $5,000 for tipping law enforcement officials on school crimes ranging from weapons to vandalism.

The program's primary targets are weapons and drugs on campus. Callers whose information leads to a gun being confiscated from a student receive a $1,000 award. Students who turn in found guns receive $300.

True, some polls have shown a recent slippage in public support for stronger regulation of guns. But most Americans, surely, can still see the value of measures to promote gun safety and check out gun buyers. Such steps will enhance everyone's security.

From the Big Apple, which imposes some of the nation's strictest gun prohibitions, the truth is there if only people will see it:

"Another police source said there is less fear of a confrontation robbing a bank. At a grocery stickup, the robber might be confronted with an owner packing a gun or swinging a baseball bat."

Calhoun County's top prosecutor says Alabama law on guns in the hands of juveniles is weak and should be more in line with federal statutes.

"We only have two statutes that say anything about the delivery of guns to juveniles, and a $50 to $500 fine is just weak," District Attorney Joe Hubbard says.

Despite national reports of a run on guns since Sept. 11, local retailers say sales have remained steady and any increases can be attributed to normal hunting season sales and holiday gift-giving.

However, several gun safety instructors said they have seen increases in the number of people signing up for concealed handgun training since the terrorist attacks.

"Passengers are now expected to take action during a crisis. In return, they deserve a briefing and some form of compensation to encourage participation. The Passenger Volunteer Program(tm) will help improve flight security and reassure a nervous flying public. It is a fresh opportunity for the airlines to market their mileage awards programs and elite airport lounge facilities at a time when the industry needs a boost and should pay for itself," said Chapman of HWCIntegrated.

Highly inflammatory and sarcastic commentary touting even MORE gun control as desirable in the aftermath of the September attacks!

The author conveniently forgets the attackers didn't use guns, and yet he shrieks, "How much better it would have been in the aftermath of Sept. 11 for Americans, rather than rushing out mindlessly to purchase ineffective, feel-good weapons, to have demanded the tightening of controls to help keep firearms from those who terrorize the lives of half the world."

The year 2001 was not a great one to be a civil libertarian.

Polls taken after Sept. 11 suggest overwhelming support for Attorney General John Ashcroft's strong police measures, and Ashcroft recently claimed his most strident critics are practically "aiding terrorists."

Even the famous American Civil Liberties Union, founded in 1920, has had a mixed history of defending liberty in times of national crisis.

A family who sued three undercover police officers in the shooting death six years ago of a man wielding a shotgun to protect his daughter-in-law from potential robbers will get their day in court.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati has upheld a lower court's ruling that denied the officers qualified immunity. This means the family of Royal Claybrook may pursue their lawsuit claiming the officers used excessive force when they shot him.

There are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by the gradual and silent encroachment of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpation. — James Madison
