Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed several pieces of legislation dealing with firearm safety and gun buyback programs into law this week.
Two bills require the health department to develop information about Michigan's safe storage law. Another two bills standardize the terminology that schools use when dealing with an emergency situation like a mass casualty event.
HB 6144, 6145, and 6146 deals with any gun buyback programs, ordering the Michigan State Police to destroy all firearms that was purchased during one of those sessions.
The Associated Press reports that MSP acknowledged its previous disposal method only destroyed parts of the firearm.

The Fourth Circuit upheld the dismissal of a driver’s lawsuit after his Mustang was towed and his guns, a grenade and tactical gear were found and held by police, who checked on him because he was parked in an unauthorized area near a road that runs between Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon. The car had to be towed because the driver did not have license and registration on him, and they had a reasonable interest in safekeeping his belongings so that he did not walk past the Pentagon with a collection of weapons. |

The Manteca Police Department said a city councilor shot his stepson in self-defense during an attack on Thursday.
The shooting happened in the early afternoon at City Councilor David Breitenbucher's home on Yolo Street.
The stepson, who doesn't live in the home, allegedly attacked and threatened to kill Breitenbucher, resulting in Breitenbucher using a personal firearm to shoot his stepson at least once in the abdomen. Breitenbucher then called 911 to report what had happened, police said. |

What’s new from CCI? The outdoor industry’s SHOT Show 2025 turned out plenty of new firearms and ammunition. Not surprisingly, rimfire specialist and Blazer-producer CCI put out a trio of young product lines.
With rapidly growing interest in all things suppressor-related, it’s not surprising to see more suppressor-specific loads coming from ammunition manufacturers. To that end, CCI’s new Suppressor Max 22 Long Rifle is designed for subsonic, low-decibel use.

After the deadly shooting at Antioch High School, Democratic lawmakers are pushing for legislation to hold irresponsible gun owners who “recklessly” store their firearms accountable, while one Republican has proposed stripping lawmakers’ power to pass certain gun regulation laws from Tennessee’s Constitution to reaffirm the citizens’ right to bear arms.
The proposals couldn’t be more opposite and could offer a glimpse of what’s to come this legislative session. |

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is congratulating President Donald Trump for quickly following through on a promise to shut down the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which was a thinly disguised Biden administration gun control operation.
“This gun control bureaucracy had no place in the White House, and it should never have been created,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. |

Wildfires have once again devastated California, reducing vibrant neighborhoods and close-knit communities to piles of ash in a matter of days.
The death toll continues to climb as firefighters and search teams recover the missing, and estimated damages now exceed $250 billion. Many residents are grappling with the heartbreaking reality that their homes—and priceless family heirlooms—are gone forever.
It is apocalyptic and utterly heartbreaking. My prayers go out to those mourning the loss of life, property, and their way of living. |

Gun violence prevention activists are outraged after President Donald Trump shuttered an office set up by former President Joe Biden to promote common sense gun reforms at the federal, state, and local levels.
The website for the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which was active prior to Trump’s inauguration, now directs to a 404 error message. Trump officials did not answer questions about why the page was closed or if the president plans to launch a revamped gun violence prevention program. |

The story of Lt. Col. Robert K. Brown is not just a tale of personal heroism or military expertise; it is also a narrative about revolutionizing the way military stories are told.
As the founder of Soldier of Fortune Magazine, Brown [a great friend and mentor for AmmoLand News] created a platform that melded hard-hitting journalism with an unwavering advocacy for gun rights, forever changing the landscape of military reporting and setting the bar for firearms publishing as it exists today. |

A man in Wisconsin showing off his guns to his 8-year-old stepson in an attempt to “look cool” shot and killed the youngster — telling cops afterward that “he did something stupid,” according to police.
Steven Merkel, 52, of Lake Geneva, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide in connection to the death of his stepson Michael Meagher at a residence on Lincoln Drive on Monday, according to the Town of Geneva Police Department and Walworth County District Attorney’s Office. Unlike the rifle and handgun market, truly new shotgun introductions tend to be the exception rather than the norm at SHOT Show. Last year manufacturers overwhelmingly offered niche spins on their existing products, with lightweight upland models and optic-ready receivers for wingshooters. In a continuation of that trend, this year many gun companies are retooling familiar models based on customer feedback, which means more options in a the platforms you love, and some real deals (if those budget guns can deliver on performance). We’ll add more hunting, clays, and tactical guns as we dig them up. In the meantime, here are the new shotguns of SHOT Show 2025 that have caught our eye, in no particular order. |

A concealed carry permit holder in Chicago’s South Side shot a man during a heated altercation late last night, claiming the situation turned dangerous when the other man, allegedly a marijuana dealer, drew a firearm.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on the 7200 block of South South Shore Drive. A 30-year-old man was standing outside when he became involved in a verbal exchange with another individual seated in a vehicle. The discussion reportedly escalated after the man in the car pulled a gun, prompting the concealed carrier to draw his own firearm and fire a single shot, striking the other man in the chest. |

...SFR states The American Legion’s support for H.R. 705, the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act. The legislation would prohibit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from transmitting certain information to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) utilized by licensed importers or dealers of firearms. VA would be prohibited from transmitting personally identifying information of a veteran or a beneficiary to the NICS solely on the basis that such veteran or beneficiary has an appointed fiduciary to manage their benefits, unless there is an order or finding of a judicial authority that such veteran or beneficiary is a danger to themselves or others. |

A county judge in Vermont has thrown out a case where the plaintiff argued that his arrest for possessing a firearm magazine holding more than the state government permitted was unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.
Max Misch, a self-proclaimed white nationalist (which has nothing to do with the application of the law), was arrested nearly six years ago for possessing so-called “high-capacity” magazines. He took the state to court, arguing that magazines holding more than 10 rounds are in “common use” and, thereby, protected under the Second Amendment. |

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said officers intercepted 145 handguns at Virginia airport security checkpoints in 2024, the most guns ever detected in a single year.
All the firearms were discovered by TSA officers during the routine screening of carry-on property at airport security checkpoints, it said.
Four airports in Virginia set records for the most guns caught at their checkpoints in a year — Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (41), Richmond International Airport (32), Norfolk International Airport (34) and Washington Dulles International Airport (29). |

As 3D-printed gun violence abounds, some lawmakers are looking to cut the problem at the root.
The New York state senate is currently evaluating a bill that would dramatically change the 3D printing market. Merchants looking to sell the printers, or at least those that are able to produce a firearm, would be required to treat customers as if they were purchasing a firearm. That means performing background checks and obtaining criminal histories. |

U.S. Representative Tracey Mann has reintroduced the Reining In Federal Licensing Enforcement (RIFLE) Act to safeguard the Second Amendment rights of Kansans and protect small gun store owners and Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) from the Biden Administration’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) zero-tolerance policy.
Under the Biden Administration, the ATF’s strict policy has led to a surge in license revocations for minor clerical errors, such as missing a customer’s middle initial or using a state abbreviation instead of the full name. In 2024, gun store license revocations reached a 20-year high. Despite recent claims of reversing this policy, updated enforcement guidance suggests the policy remains intact. |
