"After a campaign which featured Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin of the Liberal Party blaming the United States for a recent surge in violent crime in his country, a campaign in which Bowling for Columbine's Michael Moore may have broken Canadian law (s. 331 Non-interference by Foreigners) by attempting to induce voters against the Conservative leader, and in the wake of a failed $2 billion dollar gun registry scheme, Canadian voters voted Monday to throw the Liberal Party out of majority power in the Parliament."

"The world-wide gun control movement suffered a major setback yesterday with the general election defeat of Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin by his Conservative opponent, Stephen Harper. Observers believe that Harper will abandon many of Martin's leftist social policies -- including Canada's scandal- ridden gun registration system."

"On the campaign trail, Martin had pledged to institute a total ban on civilian ownership of handguns. Martin also announced that he would file international lawsuits against American firearm manufacturers who he blamed for the rising tide of violence among drug gangs in Canada's urban areas."

"At an afternoon press conference, Sheriff Don Albrecht identified Capt. Jeff 'Porky' Rhodes as the deputy disciplined for having lost his gun at Graham Correctional Facility in Hillsboro in November."

"Albrecht acted Monday in the wake of criticism that he was shirking public responsibility by not being more forthcoming about the incident. More than 10 weeks passed between the time Rhodes lost his weapon and when Albrecht announced that he was giving his deputy a two-day suspension without pay. Until Monday, he never identified Rhodes by name and was reluctant to discuss the issue at all."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Contra Costa County officials will decide Tuesday whether they'll bring assault charges against a Richmond man who shot an intruder at his home.

It happened early Monday morning. Police say the homeowner saw someone in his backyard and shot several times with a small-caliber weapon.

The law allows homeowners to use deadly force on their own property if they fear for their lives. But the issue is whether excessive force was used.

Some neighbors say the man who was shot was drunk and wandered into the backyard. They say they heard six or seven shots fired.

"Last year, Congress passed a law shielding firearms manufacturers and dealers from liability lawsuits involving the weapons they make and sell. But apparently that law didn't provide enough 'stopping power,' as they like to say."

"New York City sued several gunmakers in 2000, seeking to force manufacturers to prevent illegal weapon sales by suspect dealers. Last month, a federal judge ruled that New York City's suit could proceed despite the shield law, which President Bush signed in October."

"However, the success of the suit depends on data from the Bureau of Alchohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which shows that just a few rogue gun dealers are responsible for a large proportion of illegal gun sales. ..."

"Reliable sources inform me that the Supreme Court denied the certiorari petition from the Seegars case, even though the docket hasn't been updated yet. In plain language, they won't be hearing that case. The usual weasel words: Denial of a certiorari petition should in no way be construed as an opinion on the merits of the case. But I think we can all read between the lines here: the present court is not ready to hear a 2nd Amendment case... at least not this one. They have one more chance to get it right, in Parker."

"After being initially defeated last year, legislation proposed to ban assault weapons in the state has gained new support from Gov. Rod Blagojevich, drawing criticism and praise from lawmakers and advocacy groups."

"The proposed legislation from State Sen. Edward Acevedo (D-2nd) intends to fill the void left by the expiration of the Federal assault weapons ban, which expired September 2004. The new law will prohibit the manufacture, delivery and possession of various assault weapons and large capacity magazines."

"'How can we possibly allow gang bangers to be better armed than our police officers?' Gov. Blagojevich said Jan. 18, during his State of the State address. ..."

GA: 'Deadly Force' proposal is unnecessary and dangerous

"Watch out. Be careful. State Sen. Greg Goggans, R-Douglas, with a little help from the National Rifle Association, wants to make it legal for those who 'reasonably' believe they are under attack to fight back, including the use of deadly force."

"On the surface it's difficult to argue with a person's right to defend one's self or one's loved ones. In fact Senate Bill 396 is not much different from present law with a couple of notable exceptions. The present law limits to one's home where deadly force can be used. But this revision would allow deadly force to be used 'any place where he or she has the right to be.' Basically that means on the street, in the mall or in a restaurant or bar. It's one thing to have the power to protect yourself in your home. We all know who is supposed to be there and who is not. However, on the street, where everyone has the legal right to be, misunderstandings can and do happen, from road rage to an accidental bump on a crowded road."

-------
Funny, but there has been no problem with increased road rage or any other dire prediction in Florida, where this law has been enacted, and yet the gun banners still insist on fomenting hysteria.

"Responding to a city leader's stab at thwarting violent crime, Saginaw's police chief is dismissing the idea of paying people to give up their guns as missing its mark."

"A 'gun buy-back' concept that received brief attention during the middle 1990s proved fruitless in fighting crime, Chief Gerald H. Cliff told City Council members Monday."

"The buy-backs didn't reach the market that people were looking for... They weren't getting the AK-47s or the 9-millimeters. They were getting grandpa's shotgun after grandpa had died."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Larry Pratt, the executive director of Gun Owners of America, says South Africa should not make it harder for good citizens to get firearms to defend themselves.

Pratt is in the country to research the effects of the Firearms Control Act. He is currently visiting Bloemfontein.

Pratt says there are not enough police to protect people. He says criminals just get guns and use them. "We have found actually in the United States that the easier we have made it for people to be carrying guns on the street, the lower our crime rate has gone, but just in those states that have adopted those kinds of laws.

Prat says South Africa's crime rate could go up because of the gun control laws.

"That's the question posed by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) after Marriott, a black Baltimore Democrat, launched her latest campaign to allow felons to vote in Maryland. According to a story in the Washington Times, an estimated 150,000 convicted felons would be able to cast ballots if Marriott's plan becomes law. By no small coincidence, the newspaper noted, an estimated 85,000 of these felons are likely to vote for Democrats..."

"Saginaw's leaders are looking at any type of cure to stop the rash of gun violence in the city.

"No idea seems to be too farfetched for the City Council and the police chief, who took a citizen's suggestion on a way to get the guns off the city streets."

"Assault weapons are rampant on Saginaw's streets. Last week police seized a fully loaded AK-47 from an east-side home."

"Ridding the city of the weapons and the violence is a huge task with a shrinking police department."

"'I think if we had the manpower to make traffic stops to interdict the guns that are out there, to make it less easy to get away with carrying a gun, I think the violence would decrease,' said Police Chief Gerald Cliff."
