"The debate over wiretapping U.S. citizens has joined critics from both the left and the right. There are not yet many details known about the surveillance and until there are I think reserving judgment is prudent. What I wonder is where some of these commentators who now seem so troubled about encroachments on citizens’ liberties have been the last several decades."

"In ways large and small, government at every level has been curbing our freedoms for a long time." ...

"We aren’t free to exercise our rights under the Second Amendment. Governments at various levels have infringed on those rights in numerous ways."

"The news that Winchester Arms is no longer making the Guns that Won the West is the latest blow to the manufacturing industry and the loss of another American icon." ...

"It's true that firearms have become a family keepsake. I personally know the bond family members have with their deer rifles as most men and some women in my family have always owned guns."

"It's quite an honor to receive a rifle or shotgun from someone who no longer hunts or who has passed away. Even friends who don't go hunting have told me about receiving guns after a family member has passed away. They realize that it was something special to that person and it's to be cherished and respected."

"Cait Jacob's article in last Wednesday's edition of The Post, 'ACLU uneven in approach to liberty,' was an oversimplification of several complex issues." ...

"When making pro-2nd Amendment overtures, Jacob once again turns a very complex issue into a dogmatic, simple one - either by mistake or from calculated omission - when, while quoting the 2nd Amendment, she leaves out a very relevant ellipses. ...When taking the entire Amendment into consideration, the ACLU's stance on gun control seems to be arguable, at the very least. Accusing the ACLU board of directors as being, 'quick to interpret this amendment as they want,' seems quite dishonest, given Jacob's stab at objectivity."

"Despite the fact that handguns were banned in that country in 1997, the (UK) Independent is reporting on record levels of gun crime in Great Britain, and says Scotland Yard blames the rise on the fact that teen-aged criminals, who increasingly believe that illegally carrying firearms is 'fashionable', are now more willing than ever to settle 'trivial disputes' with a gun." ...

"As author James Swan puts it, 'The rate of violent crime in England and Wales is more than double the United States. It is now more dangerous to walk the streets of London than New York.'"

"The failed foreign social experiment of gun bans must never be allowed to meet our shores. It is up to all of us. It is up to you."

"A robbery at a Springfield Township convenience store ended in gunfire Tuesday night."

"Officers said a man entered the Kwik-N-Kold store on Daly Road at about 9 p.m., aimed a shotgun at a clerk and demanded money."

"The clerk gave the man money, but as the gunman left, another clerk followed him into the parking lot and opened fire on him."

-------
Submitter's Note: I'm sure Communist Cincinnati will take the clerk's gun for trying to defend himself and his business, plus arrest him for a "hate" crime.

"State Legislators in Alaska are hoping to pass a bill that will enable the most aggressive and paranoid individuals in the state to use deadly force anywhere against a presumed assailant."

"The law, known alternatively as the 'shoot first law,' 'wild, wild west law,' or 'make my day' law, made Florida a virtual laughingstock when it became law there last October, generating news coverage around the world suggesting that visitors might face risk."

-------
Delusion much Mr. Hamm? Apparently the law is so much of a laughing stock, that numerous states are aiming to implement it.

"What kind of nut would want to ban squirt guns?"

"That's the question that tens of thousands of law-abiding Illinois firearm owners are asking today after it was revealed that Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia (D-Aurora) has co-sponsored a measure that would ban the possession of everything from water pistols to hunting rifles."

"The bill in question, HB4132, would ban the sale and possession of so-called 'replica weapons' including anything that looks even remotely like a firearm or other materiel produced for military purposes."

"AT A DAY-CARE center in Germantown, an 8-year-old boy shot a 7-year-old girl with a handgun yesterday, hitting her in the arm but not killing her. The boy, whose father is a convicted felon with a long rap sheet, had bragged that he had access to guns. But why is it that after years of similar incidents and anguish and debate, the country has yet to enact laws to prevent such tragedies?"

-------
KABA Note: Let's see. We have laws prohibiting felons from possessing guns. We have laws prohibiting minors from possession. And we have laws against shooting innocent people.

"Dear Editor: "NO GUNS ALLOWED AT THE YMCA!" I just returned from my workout at the Y in Hudson, and as always, the sign on the door disturbed me. It says handguns are banned! That this healthy, busy place, full of ordinary people and many, many little kids, must post such a sign just floors me. It seems so incredibly out of place."

"This is the business strategy of Mike Christoff and Ed d’Alessandro, two Marco police officers who have invested in a 58,000-pound rig that from the outside looks like any big long-hauler, but is actually a completely outfitted, mobile shooting range."

"The duo, who operate the business when they’re off-duty, are based off Elkcam Circle in the industrial area of town."

"If necessary, they can drive the rig anywhere in the state."

"Police say Tuesday’s shooting at a Germantown day care center is an urgent reminder to gun owners that locking a firearm isn't just the smart thing to do, it's also the law."

"If the gun owned by the accused 8-year-old boy’s father had a lock on it, there would probably not have been a shooting."

"John Hall is under arrest not because he fired the weapon, but because his son found the gun, unlocked and loaded inside a closet. Leaving a firearm where a child can find it and use it is against the law."

"And so since 2002, all gun sold in Maryland come with a lock. New guns have locks built in; older guns are sold with locks to keep the weapons from engaging."

"And guns can be an overwhelming lure for a child. They see them every day on TV. The culture of gun ownership is as old as the Revolutionary War or the taming of the Old West."

"The problem is, most kids don't know how to handle a gun, yet they are fascinated by such an intricate piece of machinery. They'll find a way to pull the trigger - which too often ends in tragedy."

"Nearly 200 children a year die in gun accidents at home. We call them 'accidents' but most of those tragedies could be averted. All a gun owner has to do is lock up the firearms in a home. In most cases, all the childish experimenting in the world can't get a locked pistol or rifle or shotgun to discharge."

"There's the provision that allows citizens who get concealed carry permits to carry not only guns, but also knives, billy clubs and electric shock weapons in most public places except for schools, taverns and police stations."

"Yes, we understand that 46 other states allow their citizens to carry concealed weapons, but there's a genuine argument over whether those concealed carry laws have really done anything to lower the crime rate within their states. Besides, just because other states have the law doesn't mean it's right. Most states also allow capital punishment. Wisconsin continues to believe that's wrong."

"Firearm accidents, especially among children, continue to worry parents and law-enforcement agencies, even though the numbers have dropped in recent years. Thirty-four percent of American children live in a home with at least one gun."

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1.69 million children live in homes where firearms have not been put in safe places. In 2003, more than 2,000 children were killed by firearms, 182 from accidental shootings. Another grim statistic: More than 900 children committed suicide with a gun."

How many times do we have to reiterate the fact that 19 year olds are not children, and gang members who are killed in the commission of crimes don't exactly fit the mold either.

"Whatever it takes to stop the insanity in our communities" is what Tucker wants. Last year, she sued the pawn shop that sold the gun that killed her husband. "Shanksville's Scott Fritz broke his own school record with a 264 score to highlight the Vikings' 1,184-1,040 varsity rifle match victory over Shanksville on Friday at the Scullton Rod and Gun Club."

"Fritz set the former individual school record of 262 in January of last year. His 264 score also ties Berlin's Eric Good for the all-time District 5 record."

"Under the National Rifle Association's qualification program, District 5 rifle team members are eligible to receive a Distinguished Expert award. In order to reach this milestone a competitor must score a 264 in two NRA sanctioned matches. If either Fritz or Good scores another 264 or higher, they will be the first District 5 athlete to achieve this feat."

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.— Benjamin Franklin Historical Review of Pennsylvania. It occurs even so early as November, 1755, in an answer by the Assembly of Pennsylvania to the Governor, and forms the motto of Franklin's "Historical Review," 1759, appearing also in the body of the work. — Frothingham: Rise of the Republic of the United States, p. 413. ]
