"In an interview with Legal Times today, Peter Nickles, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's general counsel, said he is considering Supreme Court veterans Walter Dellinger III and Thomas Goldstein as possible replacements for Alan Morrison to argue D.C.'s cause at the Supreme Court in the key gun control case of D.C. v. Heller."

"'We'll be fine' in spite of Morrison's departure as special counsel to D.C. Attorney General Linda Singer, Nickles said. Nickles confirmed that he, in consultation with Mayor Fenty, decided to 'go in a different direction' and remove Morrison. Nickles, who becomes D.C.'s acting attorney general on Jan. 6, says 'it would not be appropriate' to say why Morrison was fired. ..." ...

Morrison had been hired by former Attorney General Linda Singer, who resigned two weeks ago, and put in charge of arguing the handgun case." ...

"Morrison had taken an active hand, along with a team of lawyers from the city and two private firms, in writing the 15,000-word brief that is scheduled to be filed with the high court on Friday. It is not clear whom Nickles will select to replace Morrison." ...

"'While the suspect was demanding cash from the workers ... Merrell pulled his own handgun, pointed it at the robber and ordered him to put down his weapon.'"

"Legislation introduced in the state Senate earlier this year to expand exemptions to current concealed weapon laws by allowing judges to carry concealed weapons in 'gun-free zones' is moving in Lansing."

"Senate Bill (SB) 505, sponsored by Sen. Roger Kahn (R-Saginaw), was recently reported to the full Senate floor after spending a few months before the Senate Judiciary Committee."

"The bill has a House companion in House Bill (HB) 4744, which is still stalled in committee. Both bills allow retired and current state judges who have carry concealed weapon (CCW) permits to possess a gun in gun-free zones, such as schools, day care facilities, sports stadiums and arenas, bars, restaurants, places of worship ... and courts." ...

"'People are looking for some consistency when it comes to the support of the second amendment. They’re not going to find that I once supported some gun control measure and now I've changed my mind ... I think that that's a constitutional right. It's not about hunting; it's about our freedom. "Three years ago, the Washington, D.C.-based National Rifle Association (NRA) raised eyebrows at the Georgia state Capitol with introduction of a bill to establish a peculiar new right in Georgia:"

"The right for any person to enter any other person’s personal or private property and park so long as the driver had a gun in the car!"

"Yes, I know, sounds bizarre, but ‘tis true."

"...It is said, why draw the line at 18? Why not 17? Congress can draw lines, and I see no reason why it cannot conclude that 18-year-olds have that degree of maturity which entitles them to the franchise. They are

"The Committee has heard reports that ATF has pursued license revocations and denials against firearms dealers based on violations that consist largely of recordkeeping errors of various types that are unlikely to impede tracing investigations or prosecution of individuals who use firearms in crime. The Committee encourages ATF to focus its efforts on cases where licensees commit serious, material violation of known legal duties. ..." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A Pickens police officer has been fired after he was charged with driving under the influence after he wrecked his patrol car on New Year's Eve.

Authorities say Irving "Rocky" Simmons left his home in his cruiser after a fight with his girlfriend and crashed into a tree a short distance away. He was alone in the car and not seriously injured.

Troopers say Simmons had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent. The legal level for driving is 0.08 percent.

Pickens Police Chief Tommy Ellenburg says Simmons has been fired. He had been on the force less than a year.

The Pickens police Web site shows Simmons was a patrol officer who worked DUI cases.

"With the recent cold weather I was reflecting on how convenient it is not to have to have my firearm in 'plain sight' while driving. This is the first winter that we don't have to try to tuck in a heavy ski jacket or a long trench coat behind our sidearm to comply with a moronic law. Our law changed because we worked hard at it. We were unified. We let the legislators hear from us."

"It's time to allow legally concealed carriers (such as teachers) to protect themselves and others instead of more knee-jerk, feel-good legislation that does nothing by creating more gun-free killing zones such as schools or malls. These criminals are laughing all the way to their deaths by going out in a blaze of glory with worldwide media attention. Amazing."

"Someone with a legal permit took care of the problem in Colorado. What would the death toll have been if the gunman wasn't stopped by a legally armed citizen, while cops were still en route? There were hundreds of parishioners and likely victims just a few feet down the hall. He had more than 500 rounds of ammunition. The woman who stopped him was a private citizen ..." ...

"Interesting to find the news item, 'Gunfire closes theater,' and the Pulse letter, 'Stop madmen,' on the same day (Dec. 26). At the theater 'shots rang out' and 'Eight Wyoming police squad cars surrounded the doors.'"

"These trained uniformed officers 'found no victims or weapons.' But if there would have been four or five people with CCW permits on the scene at the theater, they all could have drawn their weapons to protect the innocent. Then, when additional shots rang out, they could have reacted by shooting the 'madmen,' whoever they were. Of course, with no uniforms it would have been difficult for the CCW people to distinguish the madmen from each other." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: It's simple: The 'madman' is the one who started shooting and is targeting everyone around him. CCW holders are the ones shooting the 'madman'.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The prohibition is general. No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give to Congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under some general pretense by a state legislature. But if in any blind pursuit of inordinate power, either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both. — William Rawle, A View of the Constitution 125-6 (2nd ed. 1829)
