Both sides wielded persuasive statistics at the Washington state Capitol on Tuesday. Both sides made high-minded arguments about protecting constitutional rights during a packed and emotional hearing on gun control.
But only one side had Gabrielle Giffords.
She barely spoke for a full minute. Sometimes her words were halting and hard to understand. But when Giffords raised her left fist and urged legislators and voters alike to "Fight! Fight! Fight!" her message was unmistakable. |

Today’s dual hearing on Initiatives 591 and 594 before the Senate Law and Justice Committee in Olympia will likely have a lower profile than yesterday’s House event featuring former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, but it might have more red meat.
If yesterday's hearing accomplished nothing else, it clearly drew contrasts between both sides in the "dueling initiative" battle and revealed strategies: lots of emotional testimony from gun control proponents sprinkled with some data, responding data and details about I-594's problems, sprinkled with examples and anecdotal information from gun rights advocates. Seattle Times readers are panning her testimony and that of husband Mark Kelly. |

A deadlier bullet designed to protect you from criminals is raising some concerns. When the bullet hits a target, it actually expands into several sharp razors, making it more deadly.
The ammo called R.I.P. bullet was just shown at the Las Vegas Shot Show and hit the market a couple weeks ago.
Gun shop owners in the Mid-South said they can’t get a hold of a box and are still deciding if they even want to carry it.
Julia Sparacello owns Horn Lake Arms and said quite a few customers have asked about the R.I.P. bullet. |

Surveying the landscape in the summer of 1892, Ida B. Wells advised, that “the Winchester rifle deserved a place of honor in every Black home.” This was no empty rhetorical jab. She was advancing a considered personal security policy and specifically referencing two recent episodes where armed Blacks saved their neighbors from lynch mobs.

While self defense is not illegal in Canada it is defined in the narrowest possible terms, and discouraged to the point where most are not aware of its legal boundaries. Those boundaries are contained in Canada’s criminal code sections 34-37. The most relevant, Section 34 (2)( a )and (b) reads,“ Every one who is unlawfully assaulted and who causes death or grievous bodily harm in repelling the assault is justified if (a) he causes it under reasonable apprehension of death or grievous bodily harm from the violence with which the assault was originally made or with which the assailant pursues his purposes; and (b) he believes, on reasonable grounds, that he cannot otherwise preserve himself from death or grievous bodily harm.” |

Essentially, the discourse on the self-defense movements and their confrontations with different organized crime groups exists on two levels: an elite national and international opinion arena in which legality, institutional legitimacy and governability take precedence and a popular one in which survival, resistance and corruption fatigue predominate.
Even as the Mexican government and Michoacan’s Tierra Caliente self-defense groups signed an 8-point accord January 27 to institutionalize the ostensibly illegal organizations and draw them safely into state orbit, talk persisted in the self-defense circles of continuing forward with the encirclement and occupation of Apatizngan... |

I am a handgun-carry-permit holder but, because of the laws that existed in my state back in 2009, I was not allowed to carry my permitted gun for self-defense into the establishment where my husband and I were working. It was in this “gun-free zone” where my stalker found my husband and I, and where he shot my husband six times in front of everyone there. I learned that signs on doors that say “no guns allowed” are only respected by law-abiding citizens while murderous predators could care less. We were defenseless. A place like this is where a violent stalker will be able to harm their prey easily. |

Todd Kuchman is an entrepreneur and elk hunter in Colorado who wanted a bullet that would boost his chances of hitting his target. So he invented the Multiple Impact Bullet, a unique new round that, upon firing, splits into several fragments connected by ballistic-strength fiber.
The fiber holds the shrapnel together in a Y-shaped pattern, which makes for much better accuracy than a shotgun's blast of pellets. That minimizes the chances of hitting unintended people or things, said Kuchman. |

Once upon a time, the former Whitehall Armory contained a gun range, but it was decommissioned and taken out. Now the armory, better known as the Whitehall Athletic Club, has a basement gun range once again.
Athletic Club Owner Greg Gross said that the steel-enclosed range contains three mechanically operated targets and one manually operated target.
In either case, manual or mechanical, paper targets can be pulled backward and forward in 5-yard increments, Gross said. |

The National Rifle Association on Friday misinformed its New Hampshire members with regard to pending legislation aimed at expanding background checks to include private sales of firearms.
In an e-mail, the NRA urged New Hampshire members to contact their state representatives and tell them to oppose House Bill 1589 that, if passed, will require licensed firearms dealers to conduct background checks for all gun sales — including those made at gun shows and by private parties. |

Have you ever wondered why you can't pull your pickup truck into the parking lot of the Gillette, Wyoming, post office, go in, and mail a letter -- without giving up your Second Amendment rights?
No, actually, I have never wondered this thing. And note the logic to which these nutballs are driving the country. Simply not being allowed to take your shootin' 'arn anywhere is a surrender of your Second Amendment rights? Luckily, though, a hero is coming to the rescue. |

Last year, Maryland passed some of the strictest gun regulations in the country. It was a shotgun obtained legally that 19-year-old Darion Aguilar used to kill two people and then himself inside the Mall in Columbia.
“Had it been a more lethal type of weapon, it could have been very much worse,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. |

Recently, the 2014 Hawaii Legislature convened in Honolulu. As the legislative session gets going, the NRA is working hard to further and protect your Second Amendment rights.
There are several bills which were carried over from the 2013 session and a number of newly introduced bills, both pro-gun and anti-gun. A particularly egregious bill, introduced by state Senator Josh Green (D-3), Senate Bill 2957, would require an individual to obtain their primary physician’s or psychiatrist’s clearance before they are able to exercise their Second Amendment right. |

Capps gave a lengthy interview to the Muskogee Police Department. Moore said that Capps said the shooting was in self-defense.
“There are issues in this case of the self-defense nature,” Moore said. “The evidence bears out that there was prior incidents between the deceased and Capps. Those incidents are part of the reason at this time that charges aren’t filed,” Moore said.
Moore said that he does not believe Capps is dangerous. |

Much of my scholarship over the last two decades has focused on gun issues. Some find this an odd specialty for someone like me. Negroes and the Gun ( http://amzn.to/1iLn7cI )is a sort of answer to people who wonder and often have asked, how is it that a black law professor at a New York City law school comes to write sympathetically about the Second Amendment and gun rights. But Negroes and the Gun also demands its own preliminary explanation. |

As many gun rights activists well know, a favorite tactic of the anti-gun-rights bunch lately has been to equate guns rights with car priviliages.
To keep you, my readers, from getting eye roll-induced headaches, I won’t rehash this old argument. Instead, my focus will be on the single surviving component that has been the darling of the Brady and Bloomberg zombies: liability insurance. |

Every once in a while, America experiences a tragedy that is so heinous and agonizing, that the sheer unimaginable horror of it sends the nation into a tailspin of shock and tears on a mass scale. The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America were just such an event – an event where every one of us watched our televisions in horror, as planes filled with innocent people flew into buildings filled with innocent people, killing thousands. |

Few argue with anyone’s right to free speech, freedom of religion, or our right to due process. Nor is there much argument about our right to a jury trial, or the abolition of slavery. Why then, does the Second Amendment cause such heartburn for some?
I believe it is largely due to revisionist history of the intent of our Founders — each of whom were thoughtful and intelligent men (much more than I). They had a keen understanding for the very basic need to protect self, family and home. What’s more, they knew full well what comes with a tyrannical government. |
