Atlanta Police Chief George Turner called a special meeting Friday with members of the department's Red Dog unit following allegations of inappropriate conduct by some of its members. ...
In an exclusive interview with Philips, the passenger in the car said members of the Red Dog unit pulled over his friend's vehicle and forced the driver, Shawn Venegas, to pull down his pants on the side of the road in broad daylight. He says officers conducted a body cavity search for drugs on Venegas. No drugs were ever found, passenger Brian Kidd said. ...
Kidd told Philips that an officer also reached down his pants searching his private parts for drugs.

Aitken didn’t receive a full pardon, though, because his attorney actually didn’t ask Christie for a full pardon. Nappen explained to Reason’s Radley Balko that a pardon would have been premature while the conviction is still being appealed. A pardon would have been a much more difficult petition to win. Nappen’s primary goal was to get Aitken out of prison and home for the holidays. Now Nappen will work to get the conviction overturned on appeal, which will hopefully have the dual effect of striking down or modifying some of New Jersey’s gun laws to prevent similar travesties of justice in the future.

A University of Idaho law student is suing the school over gun rights.

Aaron Tribble, a second-year law student, wants to keep firearms in his on-campus apartment. Tribble claims the university's policy banning firearms from campus violates his second amendment right.

He filed the suit in Latah County Second District Court and said he will be representing himself.

"I want to possess a gun within the four walls of my apartment," Tribble says. "I'm not asking to have a gun anywhere else on campus, I'm not asking to carry a concealed gun anywhere on campus. I just want to have a gun in my home."

How many more presidents, senators or others must die before we awaken to this moral depravity?

Any fool with cash can waltz into a gunnery, produce some class of Mickey Mouse identification, and purchase a weapon. They may even show up for peace-related services weekly to give lip-service to the Lord.

I was in the Ambassador Hotel the night Robert Kennedy was slain. I know the meaning of personal grief!

Arthur Hayhoe seemed to present a rather oversimplified solution to what he referred to as an "unregulated domestic arsenal" ("Gun problem," Your Views, Jan.27). Guns are regulated — just not to the extent he wishes. A single firearm in a home for self-defense does not constitute an arsenal. Legislation and oversight do cost money.

As of Jan. 1, Iowa joined the ranks of states with “shall-issue” policies, which require officials to issue concealed-carry permits after a person meets specified objective criteria — typically, some combination of a fee, a background check, fingerprinting, and training.

Previously, Iowa had been one of the few remaining “may-issue” jurisdictions, meaning that government officials had final discretion on whether to grant requests for permits.

In light of the horrific tragedy that occurred this month in Tucson, many people across the nation expected gun restriction debates to catch fire.

Quite unexpectedly in Arizona, however, the opposite has happened. Republicans have continued to surge forward in their Second Amendment rights legislation.

According to The Huffington Post, the Tucson shooting did next to nothing to halt legislation that would continue to make firearms available to the general public.

What is even more surprising is that the GOP is beginning to make moves to allow students at college campuses across the state to legally carry concealed weapons.

On Thursday, Jan. 27, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives released a Study on the Importability of Certain Shotguns, which proposes that “military shotguns, or shotguns with common military features that are unsuitable for traditional shotgun sports” be prohibited from importation. This would apply to all shotguns—not just semi-automatics. As in previous “working group” studies on rifles, the study fails to give proper credit to the widespread use of these guns in newer shooting sports, or to their adaptability to hunting.

Can America the Beautiful survive with an insane obsession for guns? To continue the path we're on, our country will be turned into a killing field.

America leads all democracies in gun violence and prison population. Consider our Aussie friends. After several mass killings in their country, the Australian federal government did not hesitate to coordinate more restrictive firearms legislation with the governments of all their states and territories.

CA: Onerous Gun Laws Are Not The Answer

Libraries of ineffective, impossible to remember gun control laws persecute lawful gun owners. These laws are based on range of the moment fears, not on actual principles.

In California alone there are over 500 laws regulating what ordinary gun owners can do with their guns. These laws are so subjective and numerous that even experts in the laws cannot give direct answers to simple questions like “how do I legally transport my gun in my car?”

In 1996 a law outlawing the carry of a loaded gun in a car was construed to prosecute a man who had shells attached to the outside of his shotgun.

Another tragic, senseless massacre, and now we have the rekindled debates about guns.

There is no simple solution to this issue. Taking away firearms is not going to happen in the Untied States of America. Something needs to be done, however, and this spurs the fresh heated arguments.

On one extreme we have the position of the National Rifle Association and its supporters that there can be no restrictions on firearms. On the other extreme are the people who want guns outlawed entirely. The realistic goal is somewhere in between.

The weapons' names alone conjure the images of the old West: Springfield, Winchester, Henry, Spencer, Marlin, Remington.

Several of them, especially the 1873 Winchester, vie for the title of “the gun that won the West,” retired Army Col. Bob Edwards told a standing-room crowd at the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center on Saturday.

But he turned that statement upside down, because winning implies losing, too.

In the wake of the random shootings on Jan. 8 in a Tucson shopping center by Jared Lee Loughner, which left six people dead and 19 wounded, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, many Australians are expressing their incredulity that once again—after yet another mass gun massacre in the U.S.—the American polity seems not to have learned the lessons that even a conservative government like John Howard’s in 1996 was quick to act upon.

Sheriff's offices across the state have been seeing a major spike in concealed-carry firearms permits.

This comes after a change to state law that makes it harder for law enforcement to reject applications.

The increase in those allowed to carry a weapon has some concerned about safety.

One major stipulation that applies to universities across the Sunshine State is the total ban of guns on campus, but it's quite possible that could change in the near future.

In December, Sen. Greg Evers, R-Baker, filed Senate Bill 0234 and if passed, it would allow students to bring concealed weapons to campus and permit those with a concealed weapon permit to carry their guns openly.

Evers and others who support the bill believe that allowing students to have guns would serve as a protection mechanism against robbers or criminals who target college students knowing that they're unarmed.

The argument that deadly weapons will end up in the hands of the wrong people no matter what laws are on the books is valid.

Nothing seems to stand in the way of crazed malcontents and the dangerous criminals who attack people in the vicious acts we read and hear about every day. People who hold fast to their gun rights shouldn't misconstrue the words here as desire to mount a movement urging repeal of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution or any of Arizona's laws that give citizens the right to own guns.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The prohibition is general. No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give to Congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under some general pretense by a state legislature. But if in any blind pursuit of inordinate power, either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both. — William Rawle, A View of the Constitution 125-6 (2nd ed. 1829)
