"The XM8, proposed as a replacement for the M16 and the newer M4 carbine rifle, would be based on a weapon already developed by Heckler & Koch. The rifle is modular, meaning various barrels can be swapped to make it a sub-machine gun, a sharpshooter's rifle, a heavy-duty machine gun or a grenade launcher." ...

"It was not always thus. If you had made the same list in the early 1950s, it wouldn’t have included more than 20 or so big-game rounds. They now exist in almost unimaginable profusion. But the big-game cartridge that was most popular in the repressed ’50s, and is today, and probably will be 20 years from now, is an ancient number developed three years after the Wright brothers flew at Kitty Hawk."

Q When my son went to the airport recently, he had an unloaded pistol in a locked case checked in his luggage. Because he didn't declare it to the skycap, he was arrested. His bail was $5,600. Is this the usual consequence for being under the impression that as long as it's checked into luggage that is going into the belly of the airplane, it's within the requirements for transporting a weapon?

A The Transportation Security Administration cites specific regulatory requirements for transporting a firearm, some of which your son did correctly (the firearm was unloaded and in a locked container, and was not in his carry-on baggage).

But TSA also requires that the firearm must be declared orally or in writing, in accordance with the air carrier's procedures.

State prosecutors say they will not bring homicide charges against a 61-year-old Harvey, Illinois man who shot and killed his 21-year-old stepson.

Harvey police say the older man shot John Shedrich on Friday afternoon as Shedrich attempted to force his way into the home he had formerly shared.

They say Shedrich had thrown bricks through a window and kicked down the front door to get in.

Police said the stepfather, whom they declined to identify, fired only in self-defense.

Seattle police are investigating the theft of Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske's service pistol from his police vehicle.

The chief's unmarked Crown Victoria was parked downtown on the day after Christmas when someone broke in and took his city-issued Glock 26.

The loaded gun reportedly was in a holster but hidden from view in the car.

Police spokesman Sean Whitcomb says there is no policy against officers keeping guns in their cars, and that car prowls are a common problem in the city.

Two people were shot and wounded Sunday afternoon at a busy intersection on the Northwest Side.

Responding to a call of shots fired near the West Division Street and North Milwaukee Avenue, police officers saw a 24-year-old man with a bloodied mouth running west with a pistol in his hand, said Carlos Hererra, a police spokesman.
