The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Dec. 31 on social media, which said that the Sheriff’s Office will continue to offer pistol permits at both its Alexander City and Dadeville offices as Alabama citizens will still require a concealed carry permit if they travel outside of the state.
The statement said that Sheriff Jimmy Abbett would like to remind Tallapoosa County citizens that if they travel outside of Alabama with a firearm to states that require a permit, and lack one, they are subject to arrest in those states.
Ed.: You also need a permit to carry within 1000ft of a school, due to the Federal Gun Free Schools Act. There are likely other variations between permitted carry and constitutionally carry too. |

Police in Grinnell say a shooting at an apartment complex was self-defense.
Grinnell police say Cody McCall and Logan Moline broke into the victim's apartment on Dec. 29 and attacked him.
Criminal complaints show McCall tried to stab the victim in the throat with a kitchen knife.
That's when the victim shot McCall twice in the chest.
McCall and Moline ran from the apartment. |

A murder charge was dismissed against a 30-year-old man arrested in connection with a Sunday fatal shooting in a northeast neighborhood in Clovis, New Mexico, as officials said evidence indicated he acted in self defense.
Ian Michael Downs was charged in the New Year's Day shooting of Oscar Trujillo, 28.
The charge against Downs stemmed from an initial investigation into a report of four-five shots being fired about 9:30 p.m. near Wilmington and Northglen Streets, according to a police news release. |

The launchers use compressed air to fire pellets, which means there are no restrictions, or wait times to buy them – unlike traditional firearms.

On Wednesday morning, a homeowner in St. Louis County, MO, fatally shot an intoxicated intruder in self-defense.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:20 PM yesterday. An intoxicated man, armed with a handgun, “unlawfully entered” what he thought was his apartment.
A physical altercation ensued between the intruder and the homeowner. During the altercation, the homeowner shot the intruder in self-defense. It is unknown whether the homeowner used his or the intruder’s firearm. The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene. |

Police said a man who was stabbed during an altercation between two family members Thursday afternoon in Huntington has been charged with domestic assault.
Christopher Shawn Miller has been charged with two counts of domestic assault following the incident, according to court documents.
The documents said witnesses reported Miller suffers from a substance abuse disorder and had become paranoid and violent.
Investigators believe the person who stabbed Miller was acting in self-defense after being confronted. |

It was bad enough when, last June, an activist Supreme Court majority that comically calls itself conservative invalidated a century-old New York law restricting the concealed carry of firearms. In a stunning commentary, The New Jersey Star-Ledger has called the Second Amendment to The United States Constitution a “curse" and complain in print that it makes it harder to pass gun-safety legislation.
Wrong. It doesn’t make it harder for the New Jersey state legislature to pass gun safety legislation. What it does is make it hard to subvert a constitutionally provided right.
And, that’s a very good thing. To call the 2nd Amendment a “curse” is an outrageous and unserious comment. |

Federal and local law enforcement officials are issuing a warning after a dramatic increase in the number of firearms being outfitted with conversion devices, turning a semi-automatic gun into a fully-automatic one.
On Thursday, agents with the ATF and members of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said in 2022 there was a 500 percent increase in the use of the illegal devices in the St. Louis region.
According to Police Chief Michael Sack, in 2019 and 2020 city officers seized one device in each of those years. In 2022, a total of 27 devices were seized. Five days into 2023, the department has confiscated 3. |

The Illinois House approved a plan to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines around 1 a.m. on Friday. The plan passed on a 64 to 43 vote.
Senate Bill 2226 bans the manufacture, sale, possession and delivery of assault-style weapons. It also bans high-capacity magazines containing over 12 rounds of ammunition.
People who currently own assault weapons will be allowed to keep their guns as long as the weapon is endorsed with an affidavit by the Illinois State Police.
Gov. JB Pritzker watched the House floor debate on the six-month anniversary of the Highland Park Mass shooting. House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch told representatives that he recognizes that the topic can be contentious. |

For the past few years, Colorado’s Extreme Risk Protection Order has allowed police and family members to temporarily confiscate guns from gun-owners who clearly, and provably, are so distraught, mentally ill or unstable that being armed makes them a deadly risk to themselves or others.

Illinois lawmakers are moving forward with a proposed ban on future sales of certain semi-automatic guns and magazines with more than 12 rounds.
Early Thursday at an unrelated event in Chatham, just south of Springfield, Gov. J.B. Pritzker was confident a gun ban would advance.

Last year’s Supreme Court ruling dramatically expanding the reach of the Second Amendment beyond the home — and beyond reason — wasn’t the climax of the legal battle over guns in America. It was just the opening salvo.
The high court has yet to issue a single opinion in a case on its regular docket this term. But its so-called “shadow docket” — the emergency orders it considers in a way much more shielded from the prying eyes of the press and public — could soon open the door for new victories for pro-gun activists seeking to further dismantle state gun regulations in the Bay State and beyond.

Most of the controversy over recent Supreme Court decisions has focused on Dobbs v. Jackson, letting local jurisdictions rule on abortion access. But another lesser-known decision is having vast consequences as well.
On June 2, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, overturning the state’s gun safety ordinance. The court found that New York’s law requiring a license to carry concealed weapons in public places was unconstitutional. Instead, the court ruled that the constitutionality of gun laws will be based almost exclusively on the “plain text of the Second Amendment.” |

A central Illinois couple told a Seventh Circuit panel Thursday that a state law barring foster care and home day care providers from keeping assembled, loaded handguns in their homes violates their Second Amendment rights.
The couple, Jennifer and Darin Miller, have raised two foster children. Jennifer is also licensed to run a day care out of their family home in Shelbyville, Illinois, about an hour southeast of the state capital Springfield.
But because of that license, she can't keep a loaded handgun in her home safe like she wants to, nor can her husband keep a loaded, concealed gun on his person. |

After months of urging of the Alameda County Sheriff’s office to get their CCW application and issuance processes in line with the Bruen standard, CRPA delivered a final ultimatum to the newly sworn-in sheriff that gives just two weeks to comply. Around midnight Friday the Illinois House of Representatives passed a historic and sweeping piece of gun legislation that, among other things, would ban the sale, manufacture, delivery and purchase of assault weapons ban across the state.
The vote was 64 to 43 on the 77-page HB5855, known as the "Protect Illinois Communities Act."

However, in terms of items that are dedicated impact weapons that are also small enough to carry feasibly, the most effective options are saps and blackjacks. These items are small, yet they have weighted ends that allow for the generation of significant power when swung in a blow. Such tools generate far greater power than kubatons or other similar items that essentially enhance a hammer fist blow.
Saps and blackjacks are very effective. Unless you have used one and practiced hitting with it, you likely don’t appreciate how much power they can generate because they look small. |
