"'The laws which forbid men to bear arms … only disarm those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes,' Cesare Beccaria, an Italian scholar and founder of the modern science of criminology, wrote in his 1764 treatise on the subject. 'These laws make the victims of attack worse off and improve the position of the assailant.'"

"In a new pamphlet from Encounter Books’ Broadside series, Cato associate policy analyst David B. Kopel expounds upon Beccaria’s classic insight to investigate why the right to keep and bear arms has always been central to the American identity." ...

"Kansas citizens last year set a new record for concealed carry permit applications, according to yesterday’s Kansas City Star and Wichita Eagle, while Illinois residents began applying by the thousands on Sunday, following a trend around the country, including Washington, that suggests a public backlash against last year’s push for new gun control measures, including this state’s dueling initiatives."

"It also demonstrates, according to gun rights advocates, that increasing numbers of American citizens want to exercise their right to bear arms for their personal safety. Perhaps the rush to arms is a cornerstone of the backlash." ...

"In his ruling this week that struck down one of the last relics of Chicago’s long-standing gun ban, U.S. District Court Judge Edmond E. Chang made a startling observation. Chang noted that while one of the fundamental duties of government is to protect its citizens, 'certain fundamental rights' are protected by the Constitution, and thus should be 'outside government's reach.' To put it more bluntly, government cannot – and should not -- be trusted with those rights." ...

I guess it goes over some people's heads that that is exactly what I was doing with my remarks regarding the Second Amendment in an earlier edition of this paper. It is apparent that some people believe that the Second Amendment trumps the right that the entire constitution is based on: The inalienable Right to Life."

"Twenty-one million applications for firearm purchases were run through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in 2013 – a 7.7 percent increase from 2012. That makes 2013 'the best year for firearm sales in history,' according to the Independent Firearm Owners Association."

"Last year also marked the 11th straight year in which firearm sales increased."

"Good. An armed populace is a safer populace – a correlation repeatedly documented by crime reports released each year by the [FBI]. "Everyone and their brother is looking for the most bang for their buck when it comes to handguns, and on the lower end of that scale things tend to look pretty bleak. Your options are pretty much limited to either the Hi-Point C9, which compares unfavorably with a masonry brick, and a wide assortment of military surplus handguns that either use calibers that come in boxes with foreign languages on them or look like they were picked up after a particularly nasty battle. So when I saw that Zastava had a new production handgun that retailed for under $240, I was intrigued. And in places like New York and California, that’s damn near impossible thanks to their ludicrously restrictive laws (which don’t stop crime and don’t save lives). Now, though, Plinker Arms is looking to solve that situation by introducing a 10-round magazine that looks like a 30-rounder. "Remington is coming out with their 20/20 line of rifles at the show, which includes an AR-15 or two as well as the usual bolt action rifles. Not to be out-done, TrackingPoint has just announced that they’ll be rolling out three AR-15 rifles in 5.56, 7.62 (x39 presumably, but they didn’t say) and my favorite 300 BLK. The rifles will run about $9,500, which is nearly half the price of an original TrackingPoint rifle. The original plan was to introduce a way to track and shoot at multiple targets when the AR-15 was introduced, but that seems to have been canned as the video only shows one tag and one firing. Illinois became the last state to finally enact at least some type of concealed-carry legislation ... and a Chicago judge just struck down the city’s ban on handgun sales; Coloradans successfully recalled two gun-control advocating state senators from office and pressured a third into resigning; and once again, gun sales across America went through the roof. ..." ...
