Holding a minority of seats in both chambers of Congress, Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill have resubmitted two popular pro-gun bills.

The two measures, the Hearing Protection Act and the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, drew a lot of excitement in 2016 when the GOP held control of Congress and the White House but never successfully made it into law. Nonetheless, the bills are back for the new 117th Congress.

Gun Owners of America (GOA) is warning Floridians about a radical new anti gun bill just introduced in the Florida state senate, designated SB 186 and masquerading as “an act relating to domestic violence.”

Rather than preventing domestic/dating violence or enabling its victims to protect themselves, SB 186 instead allows — nay, mandates — that anyone convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence must have all of his or her firearms and ammunition stolen by government authorities, and further bars that person from owning or possessing firearms and ammunition!

Twenty-one million. Let that number sink in for a moment.

That’s a very big number. If I told you at SHOT Show® last year that the industry would see 21 million background checks for the sale of a firearm in 2020, you would have thought I was crazy. One year later and with the benefit of hindsight, this was truly a remarkable year for the industry across the board.

The Roanoke City Council has postponed the Jan. 19 public hearing to seek input on whether guns should be banned from city hall.

Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea said Thursday that Wednesday’s violence at the U.S. Capitol prompted the council to hold off on discussing the gun issue until after the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 20. Lea said the decision to postpone the hearing was made after he consulted with Vice Mayor Trish White-Boyd and City Manager Bob Cowell.

After what we all witnessed at the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, there is a move to ban guns at Michigan's State Capitol.
According to FOX 17, Representative Sarah Anthony had previously wanted guns banned at the Capitol Building in Lansing after more than a dozen men were arrested for their plot to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Not to mention there were also armed protesters inside Michigan's Capitol Building at a protest earlier this year that had many staff members as well as state representatives very uneasy and fearful of their lives.

In a case that sought to put the first dent in Wisconsin's ban on felons possessing guns, the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a constitutional challenge from a man who became a felon for not paying child support.

The ruling upheld the conviction of Leevan Roundtree, who had argued the law is unconstitutional in his case because his underlying felony conviction was for a nonviolent offense more than 10 years before he was found with a gun, convicted and sent to prison.

As this is being written, it appears that both Senate runoff elections in Georgia have been decided. Raphael Warnock (D) and Jon Ossoff (D) have reportedly come out on top, and with them, the balance of power has shifted in the U.S. Senate away from American freedom.

Americans who cherish their Second Amendment rights now faces an uphill fight.

With both seats flipped, the U.S. Senate will now be split evenly, 50-50, and presumed Vice President Kamala Harris will cast any tiebreaking votes in her role as president of the U.S. Senate.

A petition to make Otsego County a gun law sanctuary has been withdrawn from consideration, after concerns about its intent and language stalled it in committee.

Rep. Rick Brockway, R-Laurens, Otego, presented that petition to the county's Board of Representatives in October. The petition had more than 3,200 signatures and came from a group with more than 6,000 members, Brockway said.

However, at the board's meeting Wednesday, Jan. 6, Brockway said the sponsors of the petition were going to work on it with two other counties to make a revised proposal and wanted to pull the resolution and submit a different one later.

The year 2020 saw Americans across political and demographic lines embrace their Second Amendment rights in unprecedented numbers. Last week, Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC) reintroduced H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would give more meaningful effect to those rights by ensuring they stay intact as travelers crossed state lines.

Forty-two states and the District of Columbia routinely issue concealed carry permits to all qualified applicants. The norm among these states is to have reciprocity agreements to give effect to those permits beyond the issuing state. States are also increasingly passing universal recognition laws for all concealed carry permits.

There are some good signs during what has been a nearly year-long shortage in ammunition.

At stores, handfuls of boxes of even some of the most sought-after calibers are spending some time on the shelf before being snatched up. And an indoor range has been able to lean on longtime relationships and a unique business model to keep plenty of ammo available for those who use the range.

On Monday, Gov. Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 175, Ohio’s version of a “stand your ground” law. But even as a “gun guy,” Cooper thinks the policy, which removes what’s known as the “duty to retreat” from a dangerous situation before using lethal force, is a bad idea.

It will make people more likely to draw their gun quicker, thinking they’re protected from prosecution now, Cooper said.

A Montana House committee held its first hearing Wednesday on a bill that would expand where and how people can carry weapons, including on college campuses.

The House Judiciary Committee heard testimony on House Bill 102, sponsored by Rep. Seth Berglee of Joliet. Berglee said the bill was aimed at limiting “gun-free zones,” saying those restrictions weren’t keeping people safe.

“Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday signed a controversial ‘stand your ground’ bill that would eliminate Ohio’s ‘duty to retreat’ before using force in self-defense,” Cleveland.com reports. “The governor had previously hinted that he would veto SB175, saying he first wanted lawmakers to pass his package of gun reforms that they sat on for more than a year.”

DeWine has been on again and off again with his gun-grabber roots over the years. About the only thing gun owners can be certain of is the politician the Brady Campaign once endorsed as a “principled statesman” made his decision to sign the bill based on weighing political consequences, and went with the choice that would best serve his interests.

Not included is language from a DeSantis draft that would have expanded Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law to allow a person to shoot and kill anyone presumed to be engaged in looting or vandalism in connection with a disorderly protest. Critics denounced that provision, saying it would embolden vigilantes to shoot and kill demonstrators in the guise of protecting life and property.

Three years ago, an essayist in The Atlantic declared that conservatives had lost the culture war on guns in light of changing attitudes after school shootings in Florida, Connecticut and elsewhere.

But support for the Second Amendment remains a winning issue for Republicans, and lately for Republican women.

From newly elected congresswomen in Colorado and South Carolina, to the woman occupying the governor’s mansion in South Dakota, some rising stars in the GOP are at home on the firing range or in camouflage in the woods. And they make sure that their constituents know it, through posts on social media.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that a man convicted of failing to pay child support may never bear arms again. Wisconsin imposes a lifetime firearm ban on felons, even those convicted of non-violent felonies. This ban advances the state’s legitimate interest in public safety, and therefore does not violate the Second Amendment.

At a news conference on January 7th, President-elect Joe Biden announced he will nominate U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit Judge Merrick Garland for Attorney General. Biden’s choice of a noted Second Amendment opponent to lead the Department of Justice is an overt assault on gun rights and gun owners.

Following the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Garland as Justice Scalia’s replacement. With an understanding of Garland’s unacceptable jurisprudence, NRA strongly opposed Garland’s nomination and the Senate wisely chose not consider the nomination.

A string of crimes rang in the New Year in Choctaw County, Oklahoma.

Choctaw County Sheriff Terry Park said it started when a man entered a woman's home and robbed her at gunpoint. A few days later, a woman's purse was stolen from her car.

Most recently, Park said a man went to a woman's home and beat on the door at 2 a.m. The sheriff said the woman shooed him away with her firearm.

These crimes prompted the sheriff to share with his Facebook followers the importance of knowing how to use a firearm.
