"At the recent Gun Rights Policy Conference in Saint Louis, Missouri I had the privilege of introducing a couple of resolutions that were adopted by the assembly. The first dealt with the recent attempt by Customs and Border Protection to classify certain 'easy open' pocket knives as 'switchblades,' ... My resolution suggested that since the problem of switchblades and switchblade crime was primarily a figment of Hollywood ... and since regulating tools is never a reasonable response to bad behavior, that the rights community should support the outright repeal of the Federal Switchblade Act and any other such laws which are intended to modify behavior by restricting tools. This resolution passed resoundingly with no real discussion." ...

"'Just 39 percent of Americans now say the United States needs stricter gun control,' according to Rasmussen Reports ... Rasmussen reported that '50 percent are opposed to stricter gun control laws, and 11% are not sure.'"

"Last March, 43 percent favored stricter gun control laws, according to Rasmussen."

The case is sponsored by the Second Amendment Foundation and the Illinois State Rifle Association on behalf of several Chicago residents." ...

"Do I mention the UCLA stabbing or save it for last? I’ll save it for last."

"I wrote previously that you can have safer streets if you want them. All you need do is accept certain realities. It is my surmise that violence prevention dwells on all sorts of avoidance and does little to address what happens when avoidance fails."

"Virginia Tech has conducted various meetings on violence prevention. Unasked, I contacted Virginia Tech's Center for Peace and Violence Prevention and was answered by a polite e-mail and invitation to attend an October seminar. It was a nice response. I asked for a small tele-conference. In lieu of that, I can post here." ...

"It's a good day for the NRA and gun rights activists. Two recent polls from Rasmussen and Gallup indicate that Americans increasingly oppose stricter gun laws."

"Rasmussen Reports in a survey conducted earlier this week shows that 39% of Americans want stricter gun laws against 50% who are opposed to such a measure. Previous surveys suggested that citizens were narrowly divided on the topic making the new margin of eleven-percentage points noteworthy. Women continue to be evenly divided on the topic but men oppose stricter laws by 23%. Nearly two-thirds of Democrats (65%) are in favor of tighter restrictions but 69% of Republicans and 62% of those unaffiliated feel differently." ...

"Well, it has finally happened. A legally armed citizen in Randolph, MA lost his temper and shot his next door neighbor during a dispute about yard leaves. According to the logic of the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence it is part and parcel of their argument that guns in the hands of ordinary folks lead to bloodshed. I cannot argue that this didn't happen. It even appears that he was a concealed carry permit holder. Does this provide credence to the position that guns should be outlawed, or locked up separate from ammunition at all times? I think not."

City of Chicago, which raises the question of whether an individual's right to own guns for self-defense covers states and cities with gun-control laws."

"... at issue is whether the Second Amendment applies to the states under the doctrine of 'incorporation,' in which the Supreme Court has used the due process clause of the 14th Amendment to extend the Bill of Rights' guarantees to the states."

"That certainly sounds good for gun rights, but is it, really? The most recent, and arguably most relevant, Supreme Court jurisprudence on the Second Amendment is, of course, the Heller decision from last June. I have mentioned before that Heller is far from the unmixed blessing that some of the more optimistic of gun owners perceive it to be, but I don't think I have really explained the reasoning that brings me to that conclusion." ...

"The appeal to the president from some 450 mayors was reported by the Washington Post. The beauty part of the mayors' approach is that it calls for no new laws. Instead, almost mischievously, the mayors play to the gun lobby's own standard-issue retort to any proposed new firearms control laws or regulations - the argument that there are enough already and all we need to do is enforce them." ...

The work undertaken in the domestic sphere by what I have called 'Obama's wrecking crew' will, he points out, put a stop to the pattern of dynamic economic growth that made it possible for the United States to defeat Japan, contribute decisively to the defeat of Nazi Germany, contain communism, and ultimately defeat and prepare the way for the dismemberment of the Soviet Union."

It happened shortly before 9pm in the 2000 block of Cottman Avenue, not far from the intersection of Cottman and Castor Avenues.

The 52-year-old man was shot in the chest. Police aren't sure if he tried to stop the gunman or if he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was taken to Aria Hospital Torresdale Division, where he remained in extremely critical condition.

Police say they've brought several people in for questioning as the investigation into the robbery continues.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Those, who have the command of the arms in a country are masters of the state, and have it in their power to make what revolutions they please. [Thus,] there is no end to observations on the difference between the measures likely to be pursued by a minister backed by a standing army, and those of a court awed by the fear of an armed people. — Aristotle, as quoted by John Trenchard and Water Moyle, An Argument Shewing, That a Standing Army Is Inconsistent with a Free Government, and Absolutely Destructive to the Constitution of the English Monarchy [London, 1697].
