"In 1981, Morton Grove, Illinois became the first town in the U.S. to pass a flat out ban on the possession of handguns within the town limits by anyone except police and active duty military ... In response, the town of Kennesaw, Georgia passed a gun law of their own in March of 1982. The Kennesaw law was almost the exact opposite to the Morton Grove ordinance. ..."

That issue will play out differently in different states, but it will have a bearing in most of those battleground states mentioned above." ...

"So . . . the NRA has endorsed McCain/Palin. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but when we had gotten to within a month of the election without such an endorsement being announced, I had begun to hold out hope that maybe this time, principles would trump expediency. Foolish of me." ...

"It's felons like this that lead to the Brady types calling for more restrictions on our freedoms. Yet he is already a convicted felon & isn't even allowed to touch a gun much less own one. However, the Brady folks would contend that if they can just make it a little more illegal to illegally possess a weapon then they could somehow force idiots to not do idiotic or illegal things with guns they are not even allowed to own. The logic is impossible to follow unless you have the mind of a wombat (Before my inbox gets flooded with hate mail, I apologize in advance to all wombats & wombat admirers. You are correct, even wombats are not batty enough to indulge in such illogical thinking)."

That shooting over the weekend in Roxbury was apparently in self-defense, according to investigators.

According to the Dane County Sheriff's Office:

Douglas Deviney was shot by Brian Butler who had been trying to break up a fight between Deviney and Deviney's wife. Deviney broke into Butler's house when Butler and Deviney's wife fled to that location during the dispute. Butler told investigators he fire his .9mm handgun at Deviney "in an attempt to defend himself."

Deviney was shot three times.

He is accused of battery, domestic battery, and strangulation in the incident.

Butler has not been charged with a crime. The Dane County DA's office is still reviewing the case.

"Over the past 5 years we have all become aware of the senseless violence and terrorism that has happened in gun free zones across the United States ... After learning about each of these horrible events, I remembered thinking, 'That's a real tragedy, but I am glad those kinds of things don't happen around here.' On July 25 ... it happened in front of my home with my wife and children in the next room. I witnessed a robbery and assault of two people in which the criminal was armed. After that incident, I suddenly realized that my wife and I could not adequately, and legally, defend ourselves if that happened to us outside our home ... I have concluded that New Jersey is one very large Gun Free Zone. That thought disturbs me very much." ...

"That does not include a number of people who are involved in the open carry movement who do not require a license to carry their hardware. Washington is one of a handful of states with a very active and gradually growing open carry cadre, and open carry has always been legal in the state, with at least two appeals court rulings upholding the practice." ...
