Democratic Leadership Council Courting Gun Owners with Fraud, Says Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA)

"CCRKBA today called the Democratic Leadership Council's joint weekend conference in Atlanta with the anti-gun Americans for Gun Safety 'a fraud designed to fool gun owners into thinking that Democrats are truly interested in gun rights, when they are really pushing gun control disguised as gun safety.' "

"The DLC and AGS conference is entitled 'God, Guns and Guts: Seizing the Cultural Center.' It is an effort to portray the Democratic Party as more pro-gun. CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb's response was blunt: 'Dream on.' "

" 'By meeting with AGS,' Waldron continued, 'Democrats are trying to convince voters, and especially gun owners, that they are pro-gun. Look at the AGS record, and you find this organization has supported every gun control measure to come down the legislative pike since it was founded. They're not a gun rights organization. They're not even a gun safety organization. They're a gun control group, the proverbial wolf disguised in sheep's clothing.' "

"The poll found that gun owning voters often assume that Democrats, particularly if they are silent on the issue, are anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment, and disrespectful of the values held by those who own firearms." ...

"...In a generic congressional ballot, a Democrat trails a Republican who supports Second Amendment rights by a margin of 42-45%. When the Democrat is described as one who supports Second Amendment rights, closing gun law loopholes, and vigorous enforcement of existing laws, the Democrat wins 57-32%. Support for this "rights and responsibilities" Democrat increases from 30% to 44% among gun owners and from 52% to 68% among non-gun owners.

"The perception that Democrats are hostile to the rights of gun owners has damaged the party in the last two elections and will do so again in 2004 unless they change their ways, the Democratic Leadership Council said yesterday."

"Al From, founder of the centrist DLC, and Democratic Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana and Mark Pryor of Arkansas said the antigun image perpetuates the idea that Democrats are 'cultural elites,' alienating them from mainstream voters."

"The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence United with the Million Mom March has taken out a full-page advertisement in today's New York Times..."

"The ad focuses on the notorious Bull's Eye Shooter Supply, the source of the Bushmaster XM15 rifle that John Muhammad and Lee Malvo used in their murderous crime spree. The Tacoma, Washington-based Bull's Eye has a history of misconduct, including having 238 weapons found to be missing from its inventory. In fact, according to the Seattle Times, Muhammad honed his marksmanship at the Bull's Eye firing range. His alleged underage accomplice has told investigators that he shoplifted the three-foot long rife from the store."

"Why didn't Leonard Pitts make the list!? I'm anti-gun, too! What, they hate Molly Ivins more than me?" ...

"I believe the right to keep and bear arms is a fiction. Legal experts I respect -- including Departments of Justice previous to the current one -- have all held that the Second Amendment confers no right of individual gun ownership."

"But -- and here's the tricky part -- I also believe the perception of such a right is so deeply ingrained in the American psyche that the legal niceties are largely immaterial. As a practical matter, the right exists."

A bit of advice, Leonard: Stick to the temptations. Your constitutional knowledge is pitiful.

"I put it to the court that Runaway Jury's thoroughly fake populism coats an essentially cynical view of working-class weathervanes, ready to be blown in any direction the wind blows. I put it to the court that the only reason why Hoffman's Rohr didn't seek solace from a statue of Thomas Jefferson afterward is that there wasn't one handy." ...

"Maybe I'm just a backward old country movie critic. But where I come from, your honor, we like to see the villain outsmarted, not out-hearted. Runaway Jury traffics in every courtroom cliché, including a mawkish grab for the jury at the end of the film with a reel of a child's birthday party. The issues in this issue film could use a hearing. And few buttons are hotter than gun control." ...

"A bipartisan group of senators is introducing legislation designed to curb the sweeping government surveillance powers authorized by the USA Patriot Act, passed in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks."

"Under the Security and Freedom Ensured Act (S. 1709), the Federal Bureau of Investigation will be subject to additional judicial oversight in its search procedures."

" 'I believe the SAFE Act is a measured, reasonable and appropriate response to concerns we have with the USA Patriot Act,' said Senator Larry Craig at its introduction. 'This legislation intends to ensure the liberties of law-abiding individuals are protected in our nation's fight against terrorism, without in any way impeding that fight.' "

"Toni-Ann Tia Byfield was murdered in a north London bedsit last month, a day before she was due to start at a new primary school. She was seven years old. The killer had come for her father, a convicted cocaine dealer, Bertram Augustus Byfield, 41. Father and daughter died before they could reach a hospital."

"Her slaying is also being seen as a new low in Britain's fight against a wave of gun crime, much of it in the black community and much of it related to a tidal wave of crack cocaine use."

"Gun crime in Britain has risen by 38 per cent over the past two years (though the rate of increase is slowing), with Home Office statistics this week revealing more than 10,000 separate incidents in the year to March."

"Last night, Arthur 'Stitch' Martin, the deputy commissioner of police for crime, who is now leading the operation in the north-shore city, vowed that the police will stay in Canterbury -- notorious as a hide-out for criminals -- until they are satisfied that they have brought in all the illegal guns and have nabbed as many gunmen as possible."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Attorney General Jerry Kilgore is agreeing with the Rockingham County School Board about unloaded guns on school property.

In an opinion released this week, Kilgore confirmed the school's right to discipline a student for keeping an unloaded firearm in a locked trunk on school property.

He backed the schools, despite laws permitting unloaded firearms in locked trunks.

The Attorney General did however specify that schools were not allowed to expel students solely for having the firearms in their trunks.

"Paul Harris has taught martial arts and defense for 30 years."

"Though a self-defense class would help, there are tools you can put in your hand right now for defense. Walk to your car or house with the key thrust between the fingers of a closed fist-- it becomes a stabbing and slashing weapon; a key chain baton can be thrust in the attacker's face. "Have you read about the strange case of Tony Martin and Britain's du jour gun-control injustice? In the October 2003 issue of America's 1st Freedom, Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president, revealed in perfect clarity how Great Britain's stringent gun-control laws and abolishment of the right to self-defense have brought the birthplace of classical liberalism to the footsteps of tyranny." ...

"In Great Britain today, draconian gun-control laws are firmly in place and there is no right to self-defense. All handguns are banned in places of business and even in the home. Firearm registration facilitated disarmament and confiscation in 1998. Simple possession of a firearm carries a 10-year prison sentence, and yet, England's pusillanimous criminal-justice system emphasizes rehabilitation of hardened criminals and revolving prison doors for all habitual thieves and burglars."

"Having exposed most areas of American life to ongoing government scrutiny and recording, Congress is now poised to expand and universalize federal tracking of citizen life. The inevitable consequence of such constant surveillance, however, is metastasizing government control over society. If that happens, our government will have perverted its most fundamental mission and destroyed the privacy and liberty that it was supposed to protect."

Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction. — St. George Tucker, in his edition of 'Blackstone's Commentaries,' 1:300 (1803).
