"Eight St. Louis area collectors were indicted Sept. 28 for 'engaging in the gun business' without a Federal Firearms License. They are the latest victims in the 40-year battle over the fuzzy definition of who must have an FFL."

"Vaguely defined 'unlicensed dealing' carries more severe punishment than some willful violations by licensed dealers – plus the potential forfeiture of every gun in a collection, and the loss of gun ownership rights, firearms hunting rights, and often even voting rights – for life."

"In addition to the ruinous legal costs of fighting a felony offense punishable by up to five years imprisonment and $250,000 fine, the St. Louis collectors – five of them 60 to 79 years old – have had 572 firearms seized."

"In a marvelous moment of candor, a federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) committee has reported that it cannot find any evidence that gun-control laws reduce violent crime. American gun owners spent most of the 1990s telling the CDC that gun control is ineffective at best and harmful at worst. So it's gratifying that the lesson is finally sinking in." ...

"The Transportation Security Administration has reaffirmed its decision to have German firearms manufacturer Heckler & Koch supply as many as 9,600 .40-caliber handguns to U.S. commercial airline pilots who complete federal law enforcement training under the agency's guns-in-cockpits program."

"A contract of three one-year options to supply H&K USP40 Compact Law Enforcement Model semiautomatic handguns was signed after the agency, under pressure from House Small Business Chairman Donald Manzullo, R-Ill., reevaluated all the bids it had received from firearms companies, especially those with manufacturing facilities in the United States. The maximum value of the contract is $3.3 million, H&K officials said Tuesday."

"Traditionally, Republicans have hid behind the notion of states rights, or federalism, when confronted with their inability to let go of the Confederacy, segregation and Jim Crow. But now that Republicans control both the White House and Congress, their actions seriously call into question just how devoted they really are to those principles."

"Perhaps the best example is the current Attorney General John Ashcroft."

"It’s easier to scare someone than to persuade him. That must be why opponents of the Patriot Act say so many frightening things. It hides the fact they can’t back up their charges with any examples of actual abuse." ...

"But the reality doesn’t match the rhetoric. As Attorney General John Ashcroft pointed out last month, 'the number of times Section 215 has been used to date is zero.' "

Just because there supposedly hasn't been abuse yet, doesn't mean we should be comfortable with the government having such power.

"The route to greater academic excellence is nearly a no-brainer. There are three vital inputs to education: parents, teachers and students. You tell me: How much money does it take for teachers to assign homework, and for parents and teachers see to it that it gets done? How much money does it take to see to it that kids get a good night's sleep, come to school on time, don't fight in school, and respect authority? If these no-brainer things aren't accomplished, there's no amount of money that's going to make much of a difference."

Hitler liked gun registration, too. It enabled him to confiscate them at will.

The kinds of measures that Bob Herbert advocates have been put in place in the United Kingdom and Australia ("NRA list of enemies carries hint of madness," Opinions, Monday). The results have been sharp increases in crime.

When a town in Georgia passed a regulation requiring every household to have a gun, the crime rate dropped 86 percent.

Herbert is not in touch with reality.

"It hasn’t been updated since."

"But Tuesday, Tom Perzanowski, town marshal, presented the town council with ideas for updating the ordinance."

A first-grader opened a bag at school and pulled out a pair handcuffs Tuesday -- and then security officers found the bag also contained a gun.

A school security investigator said the handcuffs and gun belong to the boy's father, who is a police officer.

When the officer dropped his son off at Chapel Trail Elementary School in Pembroke Pines, the boy reportedly grabbed a bag belonging to his dad by accident instead of picking up his book bag.

Hollywood police have not release the name of the officer's name, but he is reportedly a senior member of the Hollywood Police Department.

There was no word Wednesday if the officer would face any disciplinary action for the incident.

"Compassion apparently goes out the window with all but those persons who follow a libertarian philosophy when it comes to voting. When a person votes affirmatively for a tax that person has decided that it is OK, for the authorities, to kidnap you and financially ruin you and if you resist commit violence against you, if the majority believes as they do. The only thing that has changed is the numbers. Ten, ten thousand or ten million, it really makes no difference. Certainly no one could consider your fellow voters compassionate and caring because they are willing to use any force to achieve their goals even against those who have done nothing to harm them."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The Marshall University Police Department will offer its self-defense class to members of the community beginning Wednesday, Oct. 29.

The class has been available to Marshall students for several years, and the MUPD has received numerous requests to offer a class to the public, said Sgt. Angela Howell.

Howell and officers Scott Ballou and Stanley Harper teach self-defense through the Rape Aggression Defense System. The system includes a series of blocks, kicks, punches and other maneuvers that can help women defend themselves and flee dangerous situations.

"We talk about prevention and then go into strikes, kicks and holds," Howell said. "At the end, we put (class participants) in a simulation where they’re actually attacked."

-------
Note that many law enforcement officers recommend self defense with a firearm, because strikes, holds and kicks require the victim to be in close proximity to her attacker, who is many times much bigger and stronger than he is. Best to avoid having to grapple with a bruiser. A firearm can be used effectively from a distance.

"The truth is, no one wants to think about an attacker jumping out of the bushes when they're unlocking the front door. No one wants to imagine that someone might approach them in their car at an intersection alone late at night, put a gun to their head and shout demands or face the consequences."

"Today, Nigeria remembers the victims of the Tiv genocide of 2001. May the souls of all those who perished as victims of state terror rest in peace!"

"Exactly two years ago, this country witnessed one of the most horrendous acts of a 'carefully planned mass killing' in her history. From October 22 to 24 of that year, the Nigerian army, which was then under the ministerial supervision of General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.), invaded Gbeji, Zaki-Biam and surrounding villages in a blood-thirsty onslaught which left over 200 innocent civilians dead and hundreds badly wounded or mutilated."

This is what happens when only government agents are allowed to keep and bear arms.

"You had an interesting article on the relationship of gun control laws, or lack of them, and firearms violence. I was struck by the statements of the National Rifle Association that they didn't comment because they hadn't enough time to review the results of the CDC's panel, and The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (The organization formerly known as Handgun Control Inc. They changed their name because they were having trouble raising money; and like their president, Sara Brady, decided to cash in on public sympathy.), which took its usual knee-jerk approach."

"Now, let’s expand the question even further. Suppose Mrs. Bartush had turned the gun on someone else instead of herself. Or, suppose Daniel Scruggs massacred those school bullies instead of hanging himself? Gun control advocates would surely go after Bartush for not safeguarding his guns. Distraught family members would surely go after Daniel’s school for not ensuring their children’s safety."

"Still, the underlying question remains. Just how much are we our brother’s — or our families’ or even our friends’ — keepers? If you cause a family member to consider suicide, fail to take steps to prevent a vengeful murder or even just see a problem and do nothing, are you guilty of manslaughter?"

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms. — Tench Coxe in `Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution' under the Pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian" in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789 at 2 col. 1.
