The New York Times editorial board debunked the prevalent conservative media myth that a "vigilant citizen packing a legally permitted concealed weapon" might "stop the next mass shooter." To the contrary, the October 26 editorial cites a recent finding that individuals with concealed carry permits committed 579 shootings since 2007, claiming at least 763 lives, noting "the vast majority of these concealed-carry, licensed shooters killed themselves or others rather than taking down a perpetrator."

A few weeks ago, a terrible tragedy occurred on the campus of Umpqua Community College down in southern Oregon. A shooter, whose name I dont care to mention, shot and killed 10 innocent people and wounded nine others, resulting in the worst school shooting in Oregon history.

Where else, but a gun show, would you see a man with an oxygen tank pushing a walker and wearing a sign trying to sell a Chinese AK-47 ($845) and an Albanian military rifle ($695)? Or where else would you see a spread of folding tables displaying survival knives, machetes and T-shirts reading "Zombie Outbreak Response Team?"

The grand illusion of zealots for laws preventing ordinary, law-abiding people from having guns is that gun control laws actually control guns. In a country with many millions of guns, not all of them registered, this is a fantasy and a farce.

Inside the administration building on Lake Superior State Universitys campus is a room with more than 100 student-owned guns.

There are 83 shotguns, 41 rifles and eight pistols. There are also 49 bows and one crossbow.

Among the owners is Flushing junior Garth Magiera, who keeps three rifles and a bow on campus for when he wants to go hunting in the area around Sault Ste. Marie. Magiera does not have a license to carry a concealed weapon, and couldnt carry one on campus even if he did because LSSU policy forbids it.

The president of the Lake State chapter of Students for Concealed Carry hopes one day that students will be able to have guns on campus for whatever reason they choose.

In 2009, the first year of Barack Obamas presidency, the number of civilian firearms in the U.S. hit 310 million, according to the Congressional Research Service, exceeding the U.S. population for the first time. Gun sales have not slowed since. In 2013, the last year of official data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, there were about 357 million civilian firearms in the U.S. Responding to consumer demand, gun manufacturers have doubled their annual production, from 5.6 million in 2009 to nearly 11 million in 2013.

Ken Stok, a U.S. Army veteran, looked baffled as he stepped up to the podium before the Seattle City Council. Hed heard that his home city of Seattle was contemplating slapping gun owners with a Gun Violence Tax. Gun owners would have to pay a $25 tax on any gun they buy and a 5-cent tax on each round of ammunition (2 cents for .22-caliber) they purchase in the city to pay for harm caused by criminals who misuse guns.

Badger Guns has a bad reputation. This month, a 6-year-old playing cops and robbers shot his 3-year-old brother in the face with a gun that his father kept wrapped in pajamas on top of the refrigerator. The boy died, one moe than 2,500 gunshot victims in Chicago so far this year, more than 415 of whom died.
