"A sweeping federal review of the nations gun control laws found no proof that they reduce firearm violence, with studies on laws ranging from waiting periods to zero-tolerance school policies having no conclusions."

"...an independent CDC task force reviewed 51 published studies about the effectiveness of eight types of gun-control laws. The laws included bans on specific firearms or ammunition, preventing felons from buying guns, mandatory waiting periods and firearm registration. In every case, a CDC task force found insufficient evidence to determine effectiveness.

Translation: There is no evidence that these laws work.

"An independent panel has found 'insufficient evidence' to rate the effectiveness of various gun laws in the United States."

"This is not the same thing as saying existing laws don't work to curb violence." ...

"Fielding and his colleagues are recommending more, better quality studies to try to discern the effectiveness of these laws."

-------
Let's get this straight. Years of various studies fail to show that gun control is effective at preventing crime, but more studies are needed?

"Gun control activists seized on the first anniversary of the Washington, D.C., sniper shootings a day early Wednesday to press their call for expanding restrictions on the Second Amendment right of American citizens to keep and bear arms. Gun rights advocates said Thursday that no one should be surprised by the exploitation of a tragedy."

"Speaking about the sniper shootings Wednesday, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) became so angry over the prospect that Congress might not extend a ban on military-looking semi-automatic rifles, commonly referred to by the misnomer 'assault weapons,' that she was almost yelling."

A close-up shot of someone pulling a gun is shown, followed by scenes of mothers and other family members distraught over the loss of a relative." ...

Most people who bring concealed handguns to Lambert Airport in St. Louis won't be able to bring them past the parking lot.

In anticipation of the new concealed-carry law, airport officials approved a policy Wednesday banning guns from most areas of the airport.

The policy allows law enforcement officer, security guards, air marshals and specially-trained pilots to bring firearms into the airport.

It also permits passengers to bring unloaded firearms in locked cases inside checked luggage as long as the weapons are declared with the airlines. Weapons will not be permitted in any carry-on luggage.

Airline and airport personnel will also be able to get special written permission if a firearm is needed to perform their duties.

"The image of some government agent flipping through your library records for any reason whatsoever would make any citizen nervous. Maybe even motivate you to join the organization that has issued this grave warning."

"But it turns out the ACLU's repeated assertions about your library records aren't true. A recently declassified government report found that, since September 11, 2001, the grand total of times the Justice Department has used the Patriot Act to look at any person's library records is Zero. Of course, law-abiding Americans never had anything to fear in the first place, since section 215 only applies to those suspected of international terrorism." ...

"Many people feel safer with a loaded gun under a pillow or someplace handy. And some people don't want safety locks slowing their response times."

"But when kids are loose in a house with loaded guns handy, something is far more likely to go horribly wrong than right."

"A lot of parents will not let their children visit homes where guns are kept, especially if the guns are not locked away. Neighbors may be offended when asked, 'Do you have any guns in the house?' Or, 'Do you have any guns that children might reach?' But when a 4-year-old can shoot and kill someone, those are questions worth asking."

"Naomi Bates, whose mother, Marian, was killed protecting her other daughter from the gunmen who burst into their family-owned shop, said ministers should 'put their money where their mouth is'."

"The rebuke from the latest family to be devastated by gun crime came as the Home Secretary told Labour’s annual conference that tough action would be taken in the wake of Mrs. Bates’s death on Wednesday. In a well-received address, Mr. Blunkett said Labour needed a third term of office if it was to implement its law-and-order policies successfully."

Four armed robbery suspects had been arrested in Pretoria since Wednesday night within minutes of committing their respective crimes.

Three men who robbed a liquor store in the city centre were apprehended by patrolling police as they ran away, said police Inspector Percy Morokane.

On Thursday morning, two men with pistols held up two couples in a house in Garsfontein.

Morokane said the intruders entered through an unlocked door, and took goods worth about R50 000.

The men fled and their victims called the police. One of the robbers was arrested in the area shortly thereafter, Morokane said. All the stolen goods were recovered.

First on page

"The National Rifle Association signed on to the plan. Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, who had killed similar bills in the past, promised to back it, and Americans for Gun Safety got on board. Passage seems assured.

It is good to see agreement on this significant piece of legislation. And it is good to see Congress put this sort of money into the upgrade. But there is one nagging question -- is it enough? Will $375 million a year for three years accomplish the task? Or does this become another unfunded (or in this case partially funded) mandate that will require states to spend scarce resources."

-------
The NRA is backing a plan that further infringes on people's rights, compromises their medical privacy and is touted by the enemies of freedom as significant legislation. Sold out again!
